I had my Sony DVDRW since july of 2003(I paid $350 at Best buy) I haven't never had a problem with it reading dvds until now. I can still BURN CD-Rs and read cds. But I can't read or write DVDs, i tried doing a firmware update on it but it still doesnt help. Any Ideas ? If the drive is dead, what is a good cheap replacement for it? Thanks!
$350! Wholly Moly! If you have windows xp: Go into device manager/open up the tree for cd-dvd-rom drives/double click that sony drive/click drivers/uninstall/and reboot. Any other OS,I'm not sure of? The last firmware update for that drive is 1.1a and it's from november of 2004. Try uninstalling that drive and see what it does. A good, cheap replacement: Newegg.com has the NEC 3550 for under $40!!!! I love benq drives, but they only list a couple and the lightscribe 1655 is my choice out of them. That 1655 runs about $55 Also look for Lite-on or the plextor 760.It's plextors budget line, and a re-badged Benq-1640. LG and pioneer are also good.Sony 700/710/800/810/and 820 are also great drives.
