I used to buy sony dvds all the time because they were made in japan, TY disk, but then they were made in Taiwan n now malasia. I still get them now and then when i need disks, because they are in stores. Taiwan burned a yr ago Malasia burned today, copy of the Taiwan disk Made in JP seems to be really good still. idk anything about the graphs, or dvd info pro. idk wut im askin, i jus wan some info on wut the graph is about. I care about these disk and i have like about 100 disk tat are burned on Taiwan, should i reburn, these disk are were mostly things recorded on a camcorder, so its kinda important thanks Edit: Well, im going to burn a disk right now, should i use taiwan dvd+R or should i use the malasia dvd-r, i will burn on a ty later on, but it may be a year or 2 later.
I'm not really seeing a direct question in your original post. I don't know what you burn, why you burn it or what your criteria is for a positive experience when burning DVDs. I can only tell you that Sony has been a coaster factory for me. The entire planet say TY and Verbatim DVD-R and they are right. The difference in price is nominal compared to upper class Sony media or just about any media for that matter.
Sony DVD+R Made in Taiwan are Top Quality Media. Many members here will agree. Yes, the Made in Japan are a lot better, but nevertheless, Sony Made In Taiwan are Top Quality Media. The Sony Made in Taiwan Meda DVD+R 16x have all coded as Sony D21. sony 16x + (MIT) are definitely very good. I use them to backup DVD's and they are extremely reliable, I haven't had one that wouldn't play back flawlessly on a standalone dvd player or computer. I actually prefer the sony's to the verbatims. But both are good media. I use nero to do my disc quality test and the sony's are always in the 90's percent in quality.
yea, i heard Taiwan Sony are good disks, they are much easier to find locally, so i mostly buy them. That site says the Sony Malaysia aren't as good as Taiwan ones, which is what ive read. DVDinfo Pro says Taiwan disk quality is 19.70%, what does that mean, what is used to calculate it? TYs burned a year ago got a high disk quality... was it just a bad burn of something? I'm with cyberrico on the coaster factory... Sony proved the least reliable of all tested media, even if only 'coz you never know if you'll even actually get a Sony disc... You can only really hope that you don't, actually... A CMC Magnetics or Ritek Sony might just last a while... Only Core for Valued Data in My experience is Philips Core, but they can be hard to identify as cheaper Philips are often Fuji or Ritek... Real Philips normally sold singularly and may be marked as Philips or as Maxell... A lot of people on here recommend Verbatim, but we didn't test them here and I have no idea if they make there own dyes or if they use existing producers...
Have never used Sony made in Malaysia. The Sony DVD+R made in Taiwan that I have used, very pleased with them. Two years later and they play flawlessly.And I really don't remember having a failed burn ... It also depends on the burner you use, the firmware/disc compatibility, if your drive has the proper writing strategies to write on the certain dye or not. Same disc that worked with my burner, might yield a poor burn when burned using a different drive.
Yeah, there are probably many people that after making 50% coasters out of a 50 disc spindle blame the discs, and they might be burning at max speed, firmware more than 3 versions old and playing Halo at the same time! And probably trying to squeeze 5 GB of data on a DVD-5. Another thing that I've noticed after reading through thousand of posts so far, some people rely a lot on "quality scans". I am sure they provide useful information, if done properly. I don't do any. One thing that I've learned around here is that a drive can be an excellent burner, but a lousy scanner. A disc can show different quality scores when tested on different units.I know my 3 y.o NEC is not a good scanner, so the only quality test is my own two naked eyes! If it looks good after years of storage and still plays with no glitch, is good enough for me. How's Louisiana? Hopefully warm,I'll get there after New Year probably.
Yeah... Totally good point about Drive... However, portability of product is key for me, so the disc is a big part for me... Any pointers on choice of drive would be appreciated, if there's one out there that is particularly good... Thanx..
I have used three different Lite-On drives with Sony, Ty and Verbatim disks, and I can't see any playability differences between them. I've always burned disks at either 8X or 12X, have only used MIT or MIJ Sony, never a made in Malaysia disk and have to date made exactly zero coasters with Sony disks. Go to this forum, which shows test results for quality scans with various drives, media, and write speeds to pick out a good burner for you. Thanx, buddy... I always kinda avoided Lite-On 'coz they looked cheap... I had always kinda harboured the idea Sony would be the Guru of Optical Drives, but I was quite wrong... I will try a Lite-On drive in the very near future... In fairness to Sony, I coaster any disc that doesn't play in all 4 test players and read in all 4 test ROM drives (Latter test only really applies to -R) My search is for a Disc and Drive combination that will let me produce Highly Portable Discs... As a footnote to your criteria for coastering a disk, I have an older Sony DVD-VCR combo drive which does not like the 16X media, period. no matter which drive I burn it on, which speed I burn, + or -, booktyped to DVD-ROM, which manufacturer I've tried, even the dreaded CMC-MAG disks, it won't play any 16X media. If I want to burn a movie for it I use a 4X DVD-RW disk and it'll play fine. Go figure, if you know the answer to this one, let me know.

That is another way to go. If I want a good quality DVD video, I get some Verbatim /Sony/TY. If I want something to put my drink on so it doesn't ruin my furniture, I'll go with crappy media.
