Hello. I'm not actually a newbie at all, but I'm no expert on optical drives as well. So, this seems to be the right place to post this. I'm not too sure though...

This is my very first post and would appreciate a helping hand...

Ok, the problem is very simple. My Vaio A690 laptop has the DVD+-RW drive "SONY DW-D56A" this is supposed to be a 8x drive but I've never been able to get even 4x on this. My maximum is 2.2x on Sonic.

I've tried to burn the same files with this writer and a USB 2.0 external DVD writer (a NEC) on the same rewritable disc (after erasing). The disc I used was 2.4x. The time it took for the external writer to write it all was 25min whereas the Sony DW-D56A took 40min. And we're talking about a 2.4x only...

I rarely have problems with burning DVD's as well, but that doesn't seem to be a big issue. I updated latest firmware from esupport.sony.com as well. No luck...

    Any suggestins from you?
