Sony Vaio DVD-RW only Reads CD's

    I have a Sony Vaio Laptop PCG-GRT815E with a DVD-RW (DW-U50A)

    It will only read CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RW. Whenever I put a DVD in it will refuse to even admit it's there, cannot explore or play.

    There appear to be no hardware errors (exclamation marks) and disabling and re-enablingdoes not solve the issue.

    The OS is Windows XP Home SP 2 with the latest patches.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Further information

    It appears that it can read DVD's that have content on each side of a single disc, but not DVDs that have content on just one side.
