A few months ago I got a VAIO as an insurance replacement and while I've been very happy with it I am underwhelmed by the amount of technical information available about their proprietary hardware and software. As far as quality goes, the resolution I get from any mode is 720x480. All I can say about actual encoding quality is that when I use my High Quality captures to make SVCDs the only difference I can tell between the original broadcast and the SVCD is from the VirtualDubMod and AviSynth filters I use.

Another thing that's worth mentioning is that the capture card apparently uses hardware encoding and I don't think there's any way to capture with any other software besides GigaPocket. Fortunately you can use AviSynth to frameserve the files directly into an editing app and I've always had great results, but as I said I only make SVCDs with my captures.
