Long time problem: PC playback from disk of DVD with only PCM soundtrack gives video but no sound in WMP 10 (nor Windows Media Edition = same player with different interface). But playing the same DVD in VLC works without problems - both video and audio. As I am running Windows Media Edition (with remote control) I need it to work in WMP. If anything is missing (codec?), how come it plays fine in VLC? Searched web, yes, several times, updated all drivers and patches and whatnot, loaded many Codecs, still no fun. Any clue anyone? PC ASUS Terminator 2 with Intel 3Ghz, ATI videocard, Terratec Aureon soundcard, Windows XP Media Edition.
VLC uses internal decoders, etc. external filters have no effect on it and it has no effect on dshow players like wmp. Try the file in Media Player Classic. If it works, you could install the external version of its audio decoder.
OK!, this got us half-way there. DVD plays with sound and vision in mplayerc (MPC). MPC gives useful information about the soundtrack: MPEG1 48000Hz 16bits 2 channel(s). Assuming the missing codec was the one mentioned on the download page, the AC3filter, I installed it. After doing this Media Center Edition still gives no sound. Tried changing the MCE decoder (from my preferred NVIDIA Purevideo decoder to Intervideo - both compatible with MCE) didn't help either. Opening the tray icon for NVIDIA settings when MCE is running and tweaking it, doesn't help either. Perhaps this information helps also: when playing this DVD in Intervideo WINDVD 7 there also is no sound, just image. When I tweak the settings (audiorenderer from auto to waveout or directsound), I get a short sudden burst of sound, 1 second, and then silence again. What can I try next? Thank you.
I give up... found tip on another site to connect line out to the amplifier and indeed, that works. When no sound through SP/DIF, the sound appears through the line-out... Why I need this low-tech solution? No idea. But at least it works. Closing issue.
