My guess is that his hd had an OS installed using one of the very popular keys floating around the internet. MS is cracking down on the list of known public keys and is not allowing updates. If you have a store bought machine with a COA for Windows XP, reinstall the OS using YOUR key. If you dont, you are gonna have to go out and buy yourself a legal copy.

Your friend already had SP2 installed on the hard drive he gave you? And after your formatted the hard drive, you used the copy of the software that he gave you. You then tried to download SP2, and it found that the OS you installed was bootlegged.

The solution is simple, as DoubleDwn said. Buy the software.
