my labtop has a dvd rw which Ithink is 8x and when I burned at that speed it took about 5-6 hours to burn it. I'am trying to clear my HD cause I have about 16 mb left on my HD. so could it be that cache isn't big enough.

    1.2 cpu
    504 ram
    xp he sp2

Run cc cleaner and Defragg your HDD. The you can update your firmware to the latest version...what make/model is your drive?

Just to add to Ripper's post:
Check and make sure your drives are in DMA also. Current transfer mod should also show DMA mode.

Yep defrag will help but I don't think you enuf free space to run one. Need 15-20% free. So keep deleting and clearing up free space.
Since your hard is probably pretty fragmented and very low on space playing into your speed.

Shut down everything you can when burning too - no multitasking & even disconnect from the internet and stop anti virus/spyware/firewall.
