    Hi

    This is my first post. Also my first time using both SmitFraudFix and Hijack this. I read a post in this forum from someone with a similar problem.

    My IE goes to isafetypage.com and I get a window with "Critical System Warning!" and "System Alert: Trojan-Spy.Win32.mx" constantly blocking part of my screen and can't get rid of it with Spybot or AdAware.

    Seems to have started when I downloaded (foolishly?) mmedia codec, not knowing what door(s) I was opening in doing so.

    There also seems to be a problem with my Norton Antivirus. I get it free from my local ISP in Canada (Rogers-Yahoo!). I've had to re-download it, and still it doesn't seem to be updating properly. I mention that only because this may be evidenced in the log below.

    I'm hoping to get some guidance on how I might clean this up based on the logfiles below. Since it's my first time posting to a computer support forum, please let me know if I'm pasting too much info from the logs..... Many thanks!

    Ed

    Follow up:

    I meant to explain, isafetypage.com is called up as the IE home page whenever I open it, even though the home page is set to www.google.com in Options. Can't figure out how to fix that.

    Hello symphonic, welcome to Afterdawn!

    * Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
    * Open the SmitfruadFix folder.
    * Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
    * Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
    * You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
    * The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
    * A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt.

    Post back with the contents of rapport.txt and a new HijackThis log.

    Thank you so much for your help! Seems to be clean now.

    The new hijackthis log is below.

    One other issue: my computer crashes too often. I just unchecked about 5 unneeded items in the StartUp at msconfig (including messenger programs, Yahoo stuff, iTunes stuff, Winamp). Now it's just the bare minimum (Norton Antivirus) opening at startup. Do you think that could help? Is there anything you see in this logfile below that might be causing crashes? ... The crashes became more frequent with the recent Spyware infection. Maybe now they will happen only once or twice a day as before (and I hope not when I'm in the middle of an important task :)....

    Much appreciation,
    Symphonic
