Ok, so here's my problem. I burn a DVD-R. It comes out like usual and I go to put it into my DVD player connected to my TV. It says "Bad disc". The thing is, when I put it in my computer it plays fine. I've tried multiple different burning software. I've used the same burning software, same brand of DVD-R, and same computer and burned DVD's that worked on my TV's DVD player before. But now it keeps saying bad disc, and I've tried about 6 times now with all types of different video data on the DVD to see if it was maybe a corrupt file or something.

You guys got any answers for me? It'd be much appreciated.

What brand of blank media are you using?
You say that you are using the same blank media as before but have you bought a new pack of blanks since your successful burns? Sometimes you can get a dodgy batch.
High quality media is important, and also keep the write speed down to 4x or below as sometimes writing to fast can cause the bad disc error.

    Classic no disc inserted errors:

That stand alone does not like your backups. Usual culprits:
It doesn't like the dash format from your burner
It doesn't like the blank disc if it is poor quality.
It doesn't like that burn program on your pc.
It may have been burned too fast.
    Paper/sticker labels.

    Solutions:
Quality media, and try the plus format if your burner is dual format.

What's the brand name and speed rate of the dash media you are using?

What programs are you using in the dvd backup process?

What is the brand name and model# of your dvd-rw drive?

im havin the same problems guys, need help

    burner-sony dru-710a

    media-nexxtech 8x dvd-r

    burn speed-8x

    programs-shrink,nero 6.0(sometimes decrypter if needed)

saugmon, ive read your posts and replys youve seem to been around the block, you seem to be one of the big dogs around here,im still relatively new to burning, question

1)will burning at 4x really have better results than 8x,how much does this really matter?

2)should i be buying dvd+r's instead of dvd-r's,i believe my burner is a dvd+ -16x.i heard dvd+r's are better, cause they can be booktyped to dvd-rom,therefore most dvd players will recogize the media better thinking its a dvd-rom disc and not a dvd-r disc,is this the case, straighten me out.

thanks in advance, play on playa

Dvdfreak1: If you have same problem of no disc error on stand alone/s:

Defitely try some quality media. From what I have seen, nexxtech uses some poor quality manufacturers. If you still try them, keep the burn speed slow as possible and reduce that backup target to 4300 mbs so it keeps the burn from reaching the outer edge.To reduce that target size:
    Open up dvd shrink
    Edit
    Preferences
    Click dvd-5/scroll till custom/enter 4300 mbs/click OK.

That's your new target. When you get some better media, then you can take it back up to 4360 mbs. Some stand alones still may not be able to play them. That's where media quality is critical in those picky players.

Answer #1) 4x burn speed is about par.On no disc inserted errors, usually the burn speed doesn't matter. 90% is format and 5% of those errors are media and 5% is stand alone player fault.
Depending on your burner, burn to the speed that tests better in dvdinfopro/nero speed/or kprobe. Some of this quality media, combined with quality burners do perform better at a faster 8x/12x speeds. I've been noticing it on my benq 1640 using verbatim +16x and +8x sony and fuji yudens.
Keep it at 4x till you get some quality media. After that, bump it up if you want to try.

    Answer #2:
    [bold]should i be buying dvd+r's instead of dvd-r's[/bold]

Definitely! Your sony dru 710 is a rebadged liteon. You can either set the booktype in dvd decrypter/nero has a box you can tick in the backup options that may work/or download the booktyping utility from lite-on. Backups that are booktyped by quality burners do have a heck of a lot better chance to be recognized than using the dash or plus format.Only the plus format can be booktyped to dvd-rom.This is the perfect example of how booktyping will help on no disc/dirty disc errors. You can also download k-probe.It also works with litey drives. This will give you a good indication of how many errors and where they occur.

Here's the booktyping utility. It works with lite-on and rebadged liteons like your sony. Also check for the latest firmware update.Sometimes they update firmware to help the writing strategy:

If you want to try some quality plus format verbatim, bestbuy and office depot have them on sale this week.Excellent quality Mcc-004 metal azo/mitsubishi media. These babies do scan better at the faster speed for me and my stand alones have no trouble with them.

    Good Luck

I would trash that media when you go back to watch a movie in a year or so and none of them will play you will wish you never put anything on them.

I wouldn't put anything important on those nexxtech.I'd burn them and give them to my enemies!

I believe Office max stocks that brand name?

I'd hate to see some sad sap backup their OS with one of those nexxtech. It probably wouldn't work when time comes for a reformat and then they are screwed.
