standalone .avi DVD player

I have just d/l some avi movie files and half of them wont play in my stand alone avi dvd player. There was 3 seasons in the d/l. 1 & 2 will play but season 3 wont. Is there a rule of thumb for selecting/ converting to play on a standalone .avi dvd player.

 

Have you tried VLC player?
