Hello, I have a query on the Starview 2, hopefully someone can help me. I have not yet purchased the box as I am not sure if it will work with my setup. Here is the information as best as i can describe it. I am currently with Chor**s. I have the bog standard signal coming in (About 16 Channels) with no cable box. I am living in the Newbridge area of Kildare. Can someone please tell me if the Starview 2 can give me the extra channels? Thanks
Firstly, you need to ascertain what type of signal you have. Are you in a MMDs area? Are you on true cable? Are you sure you are in a digital area and not Analogue. You need to find out the above before you buy anything or you could be left with the wrong box. The BOX will only give you what the CC send down the pipe. So I would do your research before parting with the cash. Ask a neighbour what they have or ring chorus and ask them can you get digital, if the answer is yes, ask them will you have to get an aerial on your house, if the asnwer is yes then your on MMDS, if they say no, then the standard BOX will do.
Thanks for your fast reply Mick, I rang Chorus, they told me that I can get Digital and that I don’t need an aerial, so I am not on MMDS so as you said, then the standard BOX will do. I am pretty new to this, so can you tell me how many channels I will be able to receive with the Starview 2? Do i need any specific codes for my Region?
If you are in a true cable area, then a normal THE BOX will work, you should get approx 140 channels, this includes movies sports etc etc. When you get the box, you will need to load the correct software, so ask your supplier if they can throw in a RS232 cable, come back to the site and download version 4.50 for Ireland and away you go, you wont need codes as the software will pick them up and will autoroll when chorus changes the keys
If you do buy the Box,ask for preloaded for ireland, saves a load of hassle. My son did, hooked in directly to cable in Dublin no probs.I have legit digital cable in kildare and got the Box as xtra outlet. Some problems, but great help on this forum, Celtic/Scouser and a load of "Ghost riders" will help you out. look up my recent stuff and you will see what i mean,I was a well pleased granda.
Depending on the supplier, most wont as this where things get sticky with these boxs. majority will send box's with the basic file and its up to you what ya do with it
Yeah tins42, I agree.. Great site for helpful information. OK Mick, I have ordered the box with the RS232 cable. I then realised that I don’t have a RS232 connection on my laptop so I suppose I will have to get a USB to RS232 adapter. I have downloaded a file from the supplier’s site called TheBox Ireland Software 4.5 The exact filename was: _Ireland_H20070705_450eE_api.bin I presume this is the file that contains all the settings for Irish Cable companies? I also read somewhere that the tuning menu on the Starview 2 does not have a Chor**s option & that I will have to tune manually, is this true?
The file name looks good, some stations autoscanned in kildare the rest have to be manually done. Celtic and Scouser led me through it. look up that thread. better still copy all the advice that covers setting up and be ready when you get the Box. best of luck
Thanks again Mick, Can i use the RS232 D9 Female to D9 female cable that is supplied with my Starview 2 Box in conjunction with a RS232 D9 male to usb cable to connect the Starview 2 to my laptop? I do not have a Male D9 connection on my Laptop, i just have a 9 pin Female Serial connecter.
As I said above you need the NULL MODEM CABLE and not the RS232 cable Sometimes the supply the RS232 cable and it wont work
I am getting a Null Modem Cable with the Starview 2 from the supplier, what i need now is another cable to connect the Null Modem Cable to my laptop as both the Null Modem Cable and my serial connection on my laptop are Female D9 connections. Please advise.
If your pc or laptop does not have a serial port you will need a USB to serial port adapter to use in conjunction with the null modem cable. USB Adapter info http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx...t10&doy=search&MenuName=USB to Serial Adaptor
