Hi all, I have been using this site for a while now to answer a lot of technical questions I've had and because there is so much info I have never actually needed to post anything. However, I am now considering purchasing the Starview PVR and have a few questions that I couldn't find the answers to. I already have the Box Super and am very happy with it, so I know what the Starviews are like. My questions are: 1. It has a USB connection so would I be able to transfer from my PC to the HDD (i.e home movies or anything I have downloaded) so I can watch them on my TV? 2. I have a Sky+ box and no longer subscribe to Sky, does anybody know if I could use the HDD out of my Sky+ in the Starview? 3. Fianlly, which are the most reliable sites to buy one, I have seen a number of sites selling them but don't know if they are dodgy or not. Any replies from anyone who has one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi 1. Yes, but would need converting first to the Starview PVR format, not sure if anyone has done this or what S/W is needed to convert. 2. Yes, if standard type PC hard drives are fitted in Sly boxes. 3. Wizard Satellite have a good selection/reputation or the popular auction site, use Paypal for protection. jbvid
i moved away from starviews to digivox,a lot of boxes on market have been cloned starviews,eurovox,dreambox,etc,buy from a reputable dealer and look at posts of problems with boxes and what u might encounter,and u will have to flash it as well.good luck

you will have to flash it to recieve pay channels as starview and other boxs are coming unflashed now when u buy the box come back and somebody will help you out
as boxes can only be sold as freeview,no option to turn emu on,u will need a pc with serial port[ do u ]or usb and a null modem cable to update firmware,firmware here on site
Hi jbvid I was checking other threads when I noticed that when you did a review of the Jan 08 Beta firmware you said "the recorded file format is .avi.". Does that mean that if I transfered AVI. files from my PC to the box I would be able to watch them without having to convert them? Thanks once again.
Hi There seems to be some differences of opinion about which file format is recorded on the SV PVR. I was only going by what I had read, some said .ts files, some said .avi and others said .pvr. As yet I haven't checked myself for sure as I don't use this feature, but I will check and report back once and for all especially now that I am curious. There is software around for converting any of the above formats either way so it shouldn't be a problem for what you want to do. UPDATE : Don't think it will be possible, you might be struggling to do what you want as there are two files recorded onto the PVR for each film ie (***.PVR and ***.G&T) This is with the Jan 08 Beta F/W jbvid
Thanks for checking for me jbvid. I think I will probably get one just for recording programmes because that is the one thing I do miss about Sky+ and if can somehow get them on than that will be an added bonus.
Hi What I did is picked up a cheapo Liteon DVD Recorder off the popular auction site and scarted it up to the PVR for stuff I wanted to save. jbvid
The reason I concentrated most on putting stuff on the box is because I have a few TV series downloaded in AVI. format. Now I don't mind watching it on my PC but my girlfriend doesn't, so when I saw that you could transfer to the PVR via USB, I thought I might of been able to put them on the PVR to watch on my TV. I do have avi to DVD software but I find it very time consuming to convert to that and then to DVD. But that wasn't the only reason I wanted one, so it's not the end of the world if it doesn't work. I have just ordered a new "the box pvr" and need the correct firmware update for it,I have found a link on this forum,but don't know how to use a rar file to dowload to box,I have had a eurovox in the past and got the new firmware for that and it opened automatically,can anyone help??Also give me the correct link as there are so many different ones for the box pvr!! Hi You need ver 4.506 Oct F/W, use the link below look in 'TheBox PVR' Folder and the How too in the Documentation Folder. Google for 'Winrar' to uncompress the .rar file jbvid http://eko.4shared.com/
Just with regards to the recorded files you can transfer them to your pc then use a program called tv suite by video redo to open and edit them. Hope this helps.
