Hey guys, a family member who is pretty technophobic has gone and bought Starview - The Box Super. And now I've been left to sort it out!

Before the shops closed I popped out and got them a 9pin male to usb adapter, there was already a 9pin->9pin female cable lying around.

Checked the box and it all seems to be genuine and not a clone. Got GTRom_Super_705e.exe. Hooked up the box to the laptop. At first XP wasn't liking the usb adapter, so I downloaded the drivers for it.

Turned on the box, selected the right com port (after checking) and went to do the download.

It stuck at 0% and then gave me the error "Flash Update Fail"

I had a search about here - am I right in thinking that it looks like I have a straight serial cable as opposed to a null modem? I've tried using different com ports and got the same error each time.

Assuming that's the problem and I can sort it out tomorrow, am I going to have to run more updates following this? Do I have to enter codes or anything afterwards?

    Cheers guys.

USB to Serial RS232 port adapters are notoriously unrealiable.

USB is much faster in a way than RS232, i.e. it can send more data per unit time, but that's only once the sending begins. There's a massive latency in USB when compared with RS232, and it's this latency that ensures that you'll never have a 100% reliable USB to Serial RS232 adapter.

I got myself a USB to RS232 adapter off eBay before. It worked for simple applications but it failed misserably when it came to flashing boxes, probably because the latency was too high, or maybe the adapter just did poor simulation of RS232.

What you want is a card, something like an ExpressCard for laptops, that provides you with a serial COM port. They work perfectly.

    Wellt you were right!

Tried it with a null modem cable on two different laptops, same error every time.

Took it round somewhere with a network card in the pc, plugged the box in directly with the null modem cable, flashed the box, got into the 1570 menu, changed the cable provier, turned on key emu, pressed on set default key, it updated and we're laughing.

This might be something to take note of, as the usb converter we'd bought was an expensive one from maplin for convenience, and I usually find maplin to be really good. Direct connection with the null modem cable and no usb converter seems to be the way to go.

    Cheers for your help guys!

    Glad to help :-D

I've heard that there *is* one USB to RS232 adapter on the market that does a very good job, but it's expensive. Going from one transmission type to another can be fine a lot of the time (e.g. going from USB to Ethernet, or USB to ATA) but things get messy when the "converted-to type" is in any way slower than the "converted-from type".

I'm waiting on delivery of an ExpressCard RS232 adapter for my laptop (in fact I got the An Post notice through my letterbox yesterday that said there was nobody home to sign for it). Also, with ExpressCard, it'll be nicely tucked into the side of my laptop.
