You are better using xp if at all possible, a lot of people have had problems using vista.

also if you have an xp installation disc you could put xp and vista onto the same laptop, straight forward enough to do really and handy for programs and devices that are not compatible with vista, i always had my updates for boxes running through vista and it just gave up on me all of a sudden (i blame automatic updates) so i installed xp onto the machine, no problems anymore. would save you rooting out your old machine all the time too! here's a nice step by step guide if anyone is interested http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=178390
mods if link is not allowed ill remove no prob.

Ok ill give that a go-i put in the new software yesterday at first it only found 36 channels and half of those would not work, i reloaded it twice more and still no joy, so i did a factory reset and it worked fine. It has frozen a few times and the screen goes green but then it reloads, i think i can live with that though

if your happy with it leave it alone, id personally delete the firmware and loader you used and download it again from the firmware link below in my sig and try a reflash, up to yourself though, all the best.
