i just bought half life 2 game of the year edition and installed it on my pc. but it installed this program "steam" first. then it wouldn't let me play my games if i didn't register with steam. what the h3ll is steam?

i think it connects to the internet. what if i don't have a connection?

what if i wanted to play half life 2 on one pc and cs:source on another? do i have to make a new account? can my account be active at two spots at the same time? what if i decided to give away my game, can they reregister the same game?

do i have to pay for something for steam?

also, do i have to have "source sdk" installed for my games to work?

i'm just confused cause all of the other pc games i played didn't have something like this.

Steam is Valve's little system to run their games. You have to have a internet connection and you have to use Steam to play thier games. It registers the CD-Key under your name and email address. It keeps people from trying to use copied games. You dont have to pay to use steam, but some content and future content through steam IE the expansion pack for Half Life 2 you will only be able purchase online through steam. Source SDK is the program to make maps and mods.

i feel sorry for anybody that bought half life 2 that didnt have an internet connection or did but it was only dial up. steam is good for stopping fraud but its a pain in the ass when comes to updating. it wont even let you play until youve updated everything (which took a very long time the first time i tried to play while i was still on dial up :S)

    Steam...ow the great steam...
I have a little thing called dial-up at home...
17 hours for the first update...
    3 more hours after that.
then another 7 hours after that...

    17
    7
    3

    27 HOURS!!!!

almost a day and 2/24 of a day.
ok but i do have to admit it was worth it, i was playing half-life 2 for like 35 hours
but over all steam like the body guard at a club, you dont have internet you dont get in. it sucks i know, when i got out of the chair i couldnt feel my ass.
i would recommend, sipher it off your neaghbores if they have wireless, you dont have to register for a new account, you can run in two places at once, and i would get steam off the internet, you get the expansion free and some cool demos.
