Stick with my E6600 @2.4 GHz or go with a i7 930/ i9 when the price hits the somewhere in $200-$300 range

I have a GTX 260 core 216 and an E 6600. I am thinking about upgrading to either an i7 860 with 4 GB of RAM or an i7 930 with 4 GB as well. I've actually found a deal on the Internet and I can get the 930 with a decent motherboard and four gigs of RAM for about $45 more than the 860 with a motherboard and four gigs of ram. I am leaning toward the 930 solely because the socket type may support future CPU models and it would make future upgrading cheaper.

Right now I would only be upgrading my RAM CPU and memory.


I will upgrade my video card sometime down the road.

Should I keep my current setup or upgrade?

If I should upgrade to what and why?

Does it make sense to go with the 1366 socket hoping that it will be used in the future?

 

The 930 is an LGA1366 CPU, so it requires triple channel RAM, i.e. 3GB, 6GB or 12GB. You can use dual-channel memory, but it harms performance.
LGA1156 I'm reasonably confident will eventually get 6 core CPUs I'm sure. Right now, it depends what you use the system for. If you play games, there's no reason at all to favour LGA1366, the current CPUs are actually slightly slower than those on LGA1156, and having 6 cores versus 4 gets you nothing.
If you run video encodes and 3D modelling, you want LGA1366 for the extra performance.

With this deal I can get a 1366 rig for about the same price as an 1156 setup.

That's still quite a lot. In a gaming system, the i5 750 is almost identical to the i7 930 in performance, you don't gain much with different boards, so all you're really getting is 2GB of extra RAM, when the i7 build is $560 versus the typical $450 for an i5 system. Add to that that Asus boards are pretty unreliable, I wouldn't say it's worth it.
