I started to get unplayable disc errors all the time a few months back, so I did some research and found out the lasers go bad in hitachi drives alot, so I bought a new laser replaced it ,and it didn't work, so then I figured I'd just get a new drive and then swap out the pcb board, so I bought a new drive swapped the boards and it worked for some games, but I still got unplayable disc errors for a bunch of games. So I did some more research and found out the pcb boards in the hitachi drives go bad sometimes too, So I figured that had to be my problem, so I did some more research and people suggested to just flash the new drive that I bought, So I bought the x360 usb and connectivity kit v2 and spoofed my new drive to get it to work, the flash seemed to go okay, and now I still get unplayable disc errors on a lot of games. I don't know what to do now. I've spent a lot of time and money on this thing and it still doesn't work. My question is does anyone know of any other thing else to try when it comes to fixing this unplayable disc error? I've pretty much ruled out the possibility that had to do with my drive because I've fixed the drive in everyway possible. Is there a problem with my motherboard, has anyone ever heard of a motherboard prob causing unplayable disc?
I have sort of the same problem with the same drive from day one when the 360 was brand new. Sometimes I can play backups just fine and other times I have to eject and reinsert 20 times before it will read the disk. I've tried all kinds of media and Verbatim (the type with the orange label on the spindle) are the only kind I can get to work but I still have to mess with them for a half an hour before they will read the disk. I've tried other types of Verbatim disks and those don't work at all. Now I can’t find the orange label kind anymore and have to switch but I have no idea what more I can try.
I didn't flash the drive with modded firmware, all I did was swap keys on the drive so I could use my new disc drive, but it does the same thing that it did with the old drive which is that is plays dvds fine and some games it boots right up, while others just won't boot up and I either get the "to play this disc, put it in an xbox 360 console" or unplayable disc. So could this be a motherboard problem?
Google "pot adjustment 360" That should help. Also if you're refering to backups, Hitachi drives I've seen seem to like the 4x burn speed better.
Which did you do? Put the new board in your old drive which you had put the new laser in. or Put your old board in the new drive. Also, another problem which causes the unreadable disc error, and not many know about it, is the disc will spin, but will not spin up as fast as necessary. The cause is over time, dust and lint will work it's way in to the hole the spindle post sits in. That build up will work just like the brakes on a car. If some one is in cleaning or swapping out a laser, then they should take 5 minutes to remove the motor and clean it out.
I put my old board into my new drive and it didn't really help, so I put the the new board back into the new drive, and spoofed the keys to trick my motherboard into thinking it was the old drive. It worked for a few games a few times but now, I can't get it to work at all. p.s. I'll check the motor, but I don't think thats it because its a brand new drive. It seems like it can't boot the disks. you put it in and it will try to read it for a sec and then go to the dreaded "to play this game put it in an xbox 360 console." Again I don't think this particular problem is drive related, I think its something with the motherboard. The sata cable that goes into the board has a little play to it, meaning I can kinda move it around a little. is this normal?
I forgot to mention that I also got 3 rrod right in the middle of this process and I fixed it, and the fix seems to work out with no problem, but the problem I was getting unplayable disc before rrod and still after the fix so I don't know if it was related at all.
Well I've done everything I can do to try and fix this thing, and it still doesn't work. So I think I'm going to send in my xbox 360 to get repaired. I live in Reno,NV and there aren't any people that offer that kind of service on craigslist, so I have to send it in somewhere. So far the best place I've found is www.360-pros.com has anyone ever heard of this site, or can anyone recommend any good site that does repairs?
im having a similar situation.....ok here's my problem..maximum gratitude to ANYONE who can help...I was having the unplayable disc error for new games. thought, Ohh time to get a new drive. So i bought one off of ebay from a respected seller. Rom version of my old drive was 47dj.. the new drives rom version is 27AC (rare, strange)...anyway i figured rom version doesnt matter since im throwing my old pcb in the new drive. Did everything right, didnt mess up cables or anything...and now i get "open tray" error. wont read anything. tries to, but gives up and says "open tray" Ive tried alot of fixes including a piece of plastic on the lazer configs plastic end so that the switch would def. be hit, but all i get in that case is "to play this disc, insert in a 360 console." pretty sure its a f*cking 360 console... can ANYONE help me? im about to send it to xbox360 pros but in doing so i feel shamed that i cant fix this on my own. i got SOO far...yet no cigar. ... any suggestions???
PS2Menace your a genius. The Pot Adjustment worked like a charm. Amazing what that extremely small adjustment did. Now I can use other types of Verbatim media. I can't thank you enough.
