Hello All. After being quite a fan of this site, for 'go to' info. on how to do something regarding backing-up DVDs, I've decided to join and ask for some assistance with an issue I am having. Just a quick background here, I consider myself to be between a 'noob' and somewhat 'experienced user' when it comes to DVD ripping, burning, etc... with 400+ successful single-layer back-ups. Now on to my problem... I have searched and searched for threads here that deal with making a 1:1 back-up of a DVD using the ever-popular method of using DVD Decrypter> ISO read> ISO write (changing booktype to DVD-ROM), etc. and have only found limited info. on the subject. And I also recently found a post by someone saying to 'uncheck' the box for 'Check for Structural Protection' (in the General tab) and 'check' the box for 'ELBYCDIO' (in the I/O tab) in Decrypter before ripping. I've tried (4) or (5) times within the last week, latest being last night with changing to the above settings and using ImgBurn and the same thing happened... write address failures starting when the burn is at 57%. I 23:39:02 Finalising Disc... My PC is setup with the following: - Pentium 4/1.4GHz with 1GB RAM, with Maxtor 250GB internal HD. - Iomega 250GB external drive. - Hispeed USB 2.0 PCI card. - Sony DRU810-A (DRX-810UL) External w/2.0d firmware (which I think is the latest) - Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4x (MKM-001-000) Just for grins here, I normally rip to a designated partition on my internal HD, then burn using Nero. But since I sometimes use my external burner and drive with my Toshiba laptop, I then use the external burner and drive with my desktop. Using either desktop or laptop, has given me the same problems, with the exception of a few 'successful' burns... maybe 3 out of 10. So, a few questions... 1.) Do you need to change the settings (ELBYCDIO in the I/O tab) in Decrypter/ImgBurn when you burn as well as when you rip? 2.) I have both latest Decrypter (latest that was available anyways) and ImgBurn on my PC. When I installed ImgBurn it asked me if I wanted to use the same 'engine' or something as Decrypter when installing... I think I said 'no'. Does this matter at all? 3.) Out of the few successes that I've had, I noticed that I unintentionally left the burn speed set to 'max'. My last few attempts I've changed it to 2.4x, since that's what everyone seems to say to use for burn speed. Does this matter? 4.) I also noticed when I changed Decrypter to 'ELBYCD' in the I/O tab, it said that CloneDVD was not found. So, I downloaded the trial version and installed, and so on. But, what does that have to do with ripping a DVD? and does CloneDVD itself need to be 'open'? It seems as though the layer break information isn't being ripped correctly or transfered correctly during the burn...??? That's about all I can gather. If I can get past that (and I have a few times already), I'll be ok. But, like anyone else, I can't keep making these damn coasters at 2 bucks a pop! By the way, I wasn't sure of where to post with a 'Dual Layer' question, so I thought this would be the best place to do so. Forgive me if I am incorrect. This site has never let me down in the past and I hope someone can 'step up' and lend me a hand. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help. Gregg
While we are waiting for better help update your imgburn to 1.2.0.0 and say yes when it gets to the same question. Patience, help is coming some of them are not up yet. LOL By the way the uncheck check for structural protection is generally if you are using anydvd with decrypter.
Thanks Johnny. I'll try another burn. I DLed ImgBurn 1.2.2.0, installed and said 'yes' to replace Decrypters burn algorithms or whatever it was (can't recall at the moment). I'll see what happens and post results. I won't change anything else. So, should I re-rip the movies in Decrypter WITH the 'Check for Structure Protection' checked? Does that matter? By the way, thanks for the info. Gregg
Only if you have anydvd running at the same time. The structure protection removal with decrypt interferes with the same of anydvd causing problems. Anyone with more info on these problems jump in anytime. Also let us know how goes gsmackfan.
Again, thanks for the reply Johnnyd54... I appreciate you trying to help. Unfortunately, changing to the latest ImgBurn didn't help. It was worth a shot though. Same thing pretty much happened, although ImgBurn crapped out this time at 34% complete. I did forget to change the write speed to 2.4x, and left it set to 'max' (which is what I left it at the times I did succeed). I obviously didn't want to stop it, so I left it alone and kept my fingers crossed... Please see the log below. Looks similar to my first posts' error log, just a different location (sector) on the disc, which is most likely related to what '% complete' it errored out at. There could be some helpful info. from that window as well... if someone could let me know how to get that into a post, that would be great. Thanks. I see there's something right above where I am currently typing, but I am unsure of what it means. Another question, is there a 'SPTI' setting that I need to change that I don't know about? or any other special setting that needs to be different than what the default settings are when you install ImgBurn, or Decrypt a disc for that matter? Just shooting out some ideas here... Again, thanks a million in advance for anyone that can help. I'd greatly appreciate it. I'll check back tomorrow morning. Have a good one, Gregg
Hello All. Just another comment regarding DL burning, to see if anyone can verify... I just read this on another thread from a fellow ADawner (rcm999), "A few things about DL burning: Make sure you're disconnected from the net, turn off spyware and virus programs, turn off screensavers. In other words, devote as much of your computing resources as possible to your burning. Make sure your firmware is current." I know to keep firmware current, use good quality media such as Verbatim DVD+R DL (which I've been trying), but how important is it to turn off Norton, Ad-aware SE, screen savers, etc.? I have these running when I've tried burning DLs, as I didn't give a second thought to turn them off. I've always left them on when I do single-layer burns... Just looking for thoughts on this, as well as my other questions in my above posts. Thanks, Gregg
Hey again. Personally I only make sure I'm not on the net when I'm burning. I don't turn anything off and all my dl aburns have been good except when I varied from my verbs and tried ritek. Maybe 50% with them. I have read that a lot of people do have sucess turning everything off so I would try it if still having problems. Some of you oldtimers jump in anytime and help this guy.
gsmackfan, It sounds like the DVD disk you are trying to copy might be bad and also I have not tried that movie. I set up exactly like you did in the first post you did. I turn everything off: Cable modem, Screensaver, Antivirus and firewall. Can you post a copy of the DVDDecrypter rip that you did ( you might have to copy the info ( cut and paste) from the finished rip as that might yield more info for us. You can also try the rip w/o using AnyDVD as that is an older DVD. Set the structure up using STPI in file I/O and make sure a check mark is next to 'Check for Structural Protection'. Cut AnyDVD off ( exit on the taskbar) before trying it this way
Johnnyd54, Thanks for 'pulling for me' bud! I appreciate it. Car.Mike and others, I will re-rip the disc tonight and post the log. I'd also like to post the screen capture, but I am unsure how to do that. There's some info. in there that some of the experts may recognize. Here's a basic summary of what the error window says that pops-up... (with a big red circle in the upper left corner, with a white 'X' through it). At the top, "I/O Error!" Both PCs have the same OS (WinXP SP2) and I'm using the same cables, hardware, software, media, etc. And, the last (2) I've tried with the laptop have failed as well. I know, 'flakey'! Anyways, I'll check back later, as I am at work right now. Thanks to those who have jumped in here. Much appreciated. We'll get it yet! Gregg

I know that using a DVD-ROM is preferred to save 'wear and tear' on a drive/laser, but I thought what the heck. Well, immediately after inserting the disc a window popped up saying: "Logical unit region code has not been set! This can cause errors when trying to decrypt a disc. Would you like to set the region code now?" I said yes, and set it to USA. Just thought I'd mention it. I don't think this matters in this case, but maybe it does. I've never seen this come up with my other drives, or the external DL burner. Interesting. I'll try yet another blank Verb +R DL, and even turn off (disable) what I normally have running in the background (i.e. Norton, Adaware SE/Adwatch, screensaver). CarMike, I also thought of something earlier today regarding your comment about the original disc being bad... I don't think it is bad, cause I've been able to rip the disc before (a few times actually) when making a few single layer backups. Based on comments I've seen so far, I'm leaning towards a hardware problem myself, just a hunch though... A few other thoughts... does the SPTI setting need to 'match' what it is set to when ripping? I may have asked that, but I don't think anyone has commented on it. Also, could it be a Microsoft XP update that I am missing and need? Just an idea. In the meantime, let me know if you guys see anything suspicious with the rip log. Thanks again, I appreciate your guys' time. I'll post how the next attempt at burning goes. It's a good thing OfficeMax accepts defective media back (with receipt)... otherwise I may not be so brave! Take care, Gregg
gsmackfan, The log is fine as it ripped the disk w/ no problems. Turn off Internet ( cable modem or DSL) , Screensaver, Antivirus, Firewall and try it in .iso mode and rip the whole disk The SPTI is Microsoft's answer to ASPI so since you are using XP do not worry about it. You might as well check for OS updates as it will not hurt

I did turn off (disable) my Norton, Adwatch, screensaver and my DSL modem, but I did that before burning, not ripping. I didn't think of that. I guess I have something to try next then... Oh, there was something that stood out at me in ImgBurn, under the I/O tab in settings... there's an option that says 'SPTI - use CDRom class'. This was checked. Any thoughts? Again, just shooting out ideas here. I'll be back tomorrow. I'll even try a disc from ripping to burning with the laptop if I have time. Thanks again, Gregg
gsmackfan, Here are my thoughts: 1.'SPTI - use CDRom class'. same as what I have so that is not the problem 2. I am leaning to the burner as the blank media is fine and you might get banned from Office Max if you keep carrying back the D/L blanks. LOL 3. It works in another computer but not this one- again burner or cable or sonething. Have you changed usb cables? Shot in the dark but worth a try 4. I am out of ideas
Thanks for the reply CarMike. You're right, I need to watch how many defectives I return to OfficeMax... but I've only returned (3) discs so far, about 2 months ago. I'll probably return a few and throw a few out. Such is life... I plan to try burning on the laptop tonight, and I'll see how that goes. I will post results. If that works, I'll be leaning towards the USB 2.0 PCI card that I put in my desktop, since all (3) USB ports in the laptop work fine. Thanks again and take it easy, Gregg
CarMike and others, Well, no problems whatsoever burning with the laptop. Still can't figure it out... but as we've discussed before, I'm leaning towards something with the USB ports and/or USB PCI card that I installed in the desktop PC. I mistakenly forgot to save the log, before clicking 'exit' in ImgBurn. I wanted to post that, just to see if anything stood out against the logs where it failed. Oh well. I pretty much did the same thing as I did on the desktop PC, - Turned off my wireless card on the laptop. - Disabled Norton, Adwatch, screen saver and made sure the 'power save' mode was disabled. I left the burn speed set to 'max' and everything worked out fine, with a top burn speed of almost 7x. Not bad. I tried the DVD and all is well. I guess, now I'll try backing up my other Godsmack DVD to see if this is repeatable! Thanks to those who lended a hand with thoughts/ideas. I appreciate it. This is a great site to go for help. I'll post if I come across anything else that was causing my problems on the desktop. Take care, Gregg
gsmackfan , Glad you got it done. The other computer needs to go to the computer Dr. to have them take a look at it. I still think it is the PCI card but who knows. LOL
Just noticed something strange in your log it gives your firmware as version 2.0d the latest firmware from sony for this drive 1.0d have you done a firmware upgrade on this drive you may have the wrong firmware in place
