Stop your computor from viruses when downloading internet files

Hi

Im new here and I an going to purchase a new PC with all the new stuff.
I also wanna download a few games and that and I was wondering how to stop viruses and other things that might harm my PC.
I did a few bits of downloading on my old computor and I used Azureus and I got my torrents of the pirate bay or isohunt.
I dont want to get my new computor mucked up so what you reckon that I do?

To be safe make sure scan all downloaded *.exe, *.zip, *.rar, ect files with your AV and AS before opening them.
