My BenQ DVD/CD burner has suddenly developed a strange quirk. The drive can be seen by the Device Manager and My Computer. When I insert a disc, it’ll either start up or a pop up will appear asking what do I want to do. No problem with playing or burning. But if I double click the icon, nothing happens. If I right-click the icon and select “Explore” or ‘Explore from Here”, a new window pops up entitled “Desktop” showing my desktop icons. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the drive, checked firmware, etc. Everything seems to be in order. I’ve even done the “upperfilters/lowerfilters” thing, scanned my HD and registry for viruses and/or bad entries.

Edit: To add to the confusion, it thinks a disc is in the drive because when I mouseover, it shows Free Space 0 bytes, Total size 0 bytes. Yet its description indicates still, a DVD-RW drive.

The other DVD/CD burners work fine (one internal, one external USB). Has anyone experienced this and what’s the solution?

That is odd, it seem like you tried everything. Have you tried replacing it with another drive. But honestly drives are so mad cheap, ive been using lite on and i cant complain a good burner will set you back 30$.

I tried that and I still got the same problem. In a moment of "I wonder . . . ", I decided to assign a different drive letter by swapping letters assigned to both drives. Same thing happened to the other drive. Then I assigned letters on further down and that solved the problem. Neither drive liked being assigned F:. So I assigned F: to my one of my external HDs and everything is okay. Thanks for the reply!
