Okay here is the issue I am having. When I play the MMO World of Warcraft I constantly get disconnected. Went through their troubleshooter and did everything they asked. Thought it was a router issue but its not because it happens even when directly connected to the modem. It also occurs when I surf the web, although not as often. I'll click repair network connection and wait a few secs and I'll be back up. So I thought it was an ISP issue. Contacted Comcast, even had them register the MAC address for my brand new D-Link modem. Still have the issue. They checked it out and said they pinged my modem about 100 times and never saw an issue, said everything was running at peak levels and didn't show any odd activity in my history. I'm pretty sure its not a software issue since it happens on either of my comps when I directly connect to modem. Can't be a router issue since the router isn't even involved. Well anyways It's going to be a hard one to solve because unlike noobs you have done everything right.You already did most of what I would have recommended.The "request timed out" is the problem.As to who's end it's on I think it's your end and not the ISP.The tracert implies that your ISP is responding correctly but either wow or your end is not and is timing out(i.e. disconnecting). I think d-link is the worst brand,I had a usb wireless adapter that did the same thing.Check with them for support and updated firmware and drivers. Here's some things that may or may not help: *Make sure it's not your firewall or other security app. *reset the modem.If there is this little button on it press it,You may need a tooth pick because it's so small and in a little hole to prevent accidental reset.If not unplug it for 5 minutes. * http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357
Thanks for an actual helpful response to this post. The situation has since been resolved, but you were right about the response timed out. It was on the WoW end, but they said that it was normal because the servers will not let you in unless you are authorized. What it turned out to be, believe it or not, was a setting on my network card. I have an NVIDIA nforce4 controller, and the CheckSumLoad function was set to enabled. The WoW tech support people said that this was probably causing interference with the connection between WoW and my computer, thus causing me to see unknown entities and disappearing NPCs. Sure enough, when I disabled CheckSumLoad the problem went away and now I can play lag free for hours, if only I had that amount of time! I don't know how good D-Link is, all I know is its a HUGE upgrade over the one that Comcast supplied me when I started my account 3 years ago! HAH. Anyway, haven't had any issues with it yet.
