I am trying to devise a setup that would allow me to stream avi/divx/mkv files from my home computer to a friend's computer. I didn't know if using a NAS enclosure would work or if I should go with something like a SlingBox or HAVA setup. Or even setting up a dedicated PC with Server 2003 R2. I would like it to be accessible from any high-speed internet enabled PC, but not a necessity. Any ideas? BTW: The PC that will be the streams source is wireless and is behind a Linksys WRT54G router.
you might want to try the demo of sagetv media center. You install the sagetv media center software on your source pc and browse to your videos and add them to the media library. Next you install the sagetv placeshifter software on the remote pc (placeshifter operates over the internet). I use sagetv to record tv off the air, but I also stream the video to 3 other pc's over the LAN, it works great. This is the all software solution, no need for a slingbox or NAS box or server2003, I use it with windows xp. Sagetv runs in the background so it won't slow down your computer while it's streaming. Just make sure that your hard drive where the video files are located are formatted using 64kb clusters instead of the default 4kb clusters. This improves streaming performance.
