I will be re-installing Windows 2000 & Windows XP Pro on a PC. However, this PC will Never go on the internet. I want to strip everything I can from both OS so that it uses as little resources as possible. By this I mean disable services and such. I do not know what every service does, so what can I safely disable. Thanks
Search for "nlite" This is a proggy that will strip all the unwanted things you don't need or want from XP.
First, start off by using a program like NLite to remove installed apps you don't want on the machines. As far as services go, there are some you'll never need that won't effect much of anything...some you can turn off depending on what the system is still going to do...however, there truly is little to no effect performance wise when turning off services with the exception of the Themes service. Performance tweaking is best done thru the registry, or with programs like TweakUI, XSetup, etc.
Thanks for the info!! I will download all of this tuff and figure it all out. I will still get rid of those services, just it is hard to figure out exactly which ones...
Since the early days of BlackViper's site, (now most everyone out there has copied his work)...this is the next best thing I suppose. http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
Wow, thanks for that link!!! Does anyone know which updates I will need to integrate. I have the Windows XP CD with SP2. What small updates are there left? I found this link: http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html Should I just download all of them? Thanks
