My brother just got a new HP a6300f computer. Nice system. It's got an Atapi DVD burner/rom combo. Shortly after starting up the system, I installed itunes for him since he already had an account and I was able to transfer all of his songs. We went to burn a cd from itunes and it said burner or software not found. I found a few sites with people saying the first thing and recommending the SPDT fix. That didn't work. I noticed the dvd burner didn't even show up under My Computer. I looked at it in the Device Manager and it said "This Device Cannot Start (code 10). I looked up the code 10 and found people with the fix. In fact I think the fix came from here at afterdawn. I removed the Upperfilters from the registry. the fix also said to do the lowerfilters but it wasn't on the list. NICE!!! The dvd burner now shows up. Went back into Itunes, and itunes says it wont burn because of missing files. I redownloaded itunes from scratch and was in business. I was able to burn cd's from Itunes and everything. Cool. Restarted the computer. Lost it all again!!! The burner didnt even show up in My Computer. Did everything again, removed the filters yada yada yada, and it worked again. My brother called me later in the day and said it's missing again. HELP!!!!!!!!! I thought at first it was Nero and Vista, so I took Nero off. Then I figured its an itunes and vista problem and thought I fixed it, but it keeps going back to the way it was before. The system is pretty cool. 2gb dual processor 500 gig hard drive Is the burner bad? I already recommended him to get another drive, at least dvd rom just to have 2 drives instead just the combo, but not if this problem continues. HELP!!!!
vista, itunes and drm. vista is designed to behave like this. Try some of these on the downloaded music and have another go at burning after all the drm is stripped out. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/601377
Thats not really the issue at this point I think. I was able to eventually burn cd's. The drive keeps disappearing. I delete the filter like the fix I found on here at afterdawn told me to and it comes back for awhile then leaves again. In the device manager, the drive has a yellow exclamation mark on it. It says it cannot start and it says code 10. I tried to update the drivers but vista keeps saying the drivers are up to date, but then it doesnt even recognize it. it's contradicting itself.
Try replacing the IDE cable. This IS one of the design features of vista which only some OEM installers have implemented.. The OS has the capability to disable/remove devices if it suspects you are attempting to do "naughty" things with protected content I have seen this in action so I know it exists.
