Are you converting your files to mp3?? It sounds like the files your putting on your ipod are wav files. Wave files are the files you find on CDs which takes up a lot of space.

Yep, I think mark has it spot on. wav files are totally unencoded, so you get the best possible quality, but you will not get a lot of music on your iPod. I suggest that when you import your music (whatever you use to import it), import them in mp3 or aac format. They are quite lossy formats - it would be nice if the iPod was compatible with ogg, but we can't have everything ;-)

IF you find the files are MP3 or AAC, you probably shoudl go ahead and un-install itunes, re-install and update you ipod with those ipod upaters that are released every once in awhile.

When I first saw this thread I htought it was someone else who finally realized how crappy the ipods sound is with any headphones, earbud to stereo prof.

I saw an article that was about durable MP3 players, and Nano was on it!! That was sad, and it said it had excellent audio quality? Right.... durable, bulletproof, scratch resistant Nano that soudns great... yeah.

People have lost all sense of how audio shoudl sound, no one even cares if the bass algorithm is tuned for the shape of your car or if the MP3 is 128kbps or 320kbps. To them, whatever is on tv and has U2 and eminem promoting it sounds great I guess.

Well, if you preset the equalizers appropriately for different types of songs, shell out £30 on a decent pair of sony fontopia headphones, and make sure all your music is LAME encoded (vbr) Like I do, sound is as good as any other :)

But I used to have a Creative Zen, and I have to say, Creative products (as far as portable audio goes, anyway) Harvest the best quality sound. It is just a shame that Creative feel the need to copy iPod products..

Sony have had good sucess with their new string of walkman. I am sure it is very nice, but I refuse to buy any sony products that will or may come into contact with my PC, for fear of hidden rootkit :-S

You should hear the PSP, it has the best soudn I have ever heard from a portable, and I think it's because of the space and processor it has to work with. SOny really did a nice job and if you use a high quality MP3 and transfer it to high bitrate atrac3plus the PSP really makes it's propreiatry codec SHINE. I was just blown away, I am thinking Sony is going to push the PSP's audio capabilities when they release the new PSP with a HDD, for now the storage is limited and costly.

You shoud really try out soeones PSP with atarc3plus, I hate the format for being proprietary and it's anoying not ot be able to work with mor esoftware with it, but you can hear why SOny stuck to their guns on this one.

I have a tendency to ntoice difference in pure sounds because I am used to litening to uncompressed wav music on a Bose Wave audio system and a Bose 5.1 system in the car, and Boston Acoustic surround. People have settled to much for $700 and on down systems and poorly managed music compression. They just get used to it, and when soemthign is slightly bette rthan the crap they were used to, they think it's "excellent quality".

I will especially appreciate hearing Trapt and Nickelback Live on the 31st.

I have a PSP :) It's a great bit of kit, but I have 70 gigs worth of music, so it is pretty useless to me in the Audio dept. But yeah, it has fantastic sound, and I love it. I have a loada consoles, but daren't post in the deadly games forums; the hostility in there is unbelievable.. :)

Yeah, let's keep this out of this forum, as we have gone way off topic. Feel free to continue in my shoutbox or something :)
