I've got my ps3 hooked up to my denon avr-1908 receiver via HDMI, and it sounds awesome while playing bluray movies etc, but when I'm just trying to play music, my sub doesn't want to kick in.

I'd understand maybe if it was just some low quality mp3s, but even when I try playing a cd directly (which has the dolby surround logo) I only get sound from my front 3 speakers.

It seems that my ps3 stays optimized for bluray viewing even when I'm in my XMB. Should my sub be playing the low frequencies on any sound going through the receiver, or does it HAVE TO be 5.1 + ?

Music CD is not 5.1, so you will not get sub to kick-in.
If you have volume level control (only if your sub has a built-in amp)
you might get little sound out of it if you try to crank the volume but it will not be nothing close to waht you get when it's 5.1
