Hi Guys I need help. I have been backing up my movies for several years and have followed the same path that most of you have done. I currently use DVD shrink with AnyDVD in the background. I use RIDATA Media and have used the same supplier for over 1000 disks. I use two burners, one to encode and the other to burn thus I do it all in one procedure. Have used this method for the last 1000 backups. Suddenly, most of the last ten titles will not play. I have not changed DVD player nor have I changed anything on my computer. They all seem to start fine but at about the same place, about two to five minutes into play, they get garbled and freeze up. I have to turn the machine of and then back on just to eject the disk. If I try them on the computer, using PowerDVD, they never start, it just continues to try to read the disk. So: 1) Do I have a bad batch of Media? I did just open a new batch of fifty and some titles that were backed up with this batch are working. 2) Can a Drive start to fail and mess up the encoding? 3) Could a drive mess up and not burn properly? I just have no idea how to trouble shoot this as it seems a bit random. Any thought would be much appreciated. Thanks, Don
make sure all your software is up to date first. then try backing movie directly to your hardrive, then burn them.
It's probably your media. I used to be a Ritek user, you can't trust them anymore. The discs don't last either, I've had discs that I thought were good go bad after a year or so. I had the same problem a while ago, thought it was my drive, etc, couldn't figure it out. Never dawned on me until a while later that Ritek just wasn't so great anymore. I've been using Taiyo Yuden for 6 months or a year or so. Not one bad disc yet. They have dropped in price, no reason not to use them. They are cheaper than Ritek if you shop around. Good luck.
I am coming to the conclusion that it must be the media. I just wanted to throw it out to all the experienced users in case there is another posibility. Rather than just over writing the previous encoded files, I am going to try a new system where I encode to a new folder and keep it until I am sure the copy works. I will have to try the Taiyo Yuden media and see if that helps. Thanks for the replys thus far. Anyone else has another theroy, I'd like to hear it. Peace, Don
what program are you using to burn with ?, it sounds like it could just be something needing tweaking in your burning setup
"what program are you using to burn with ?, it sounds like it could just be something needing tweaking in your burning setup" creaky, I burn with Nero. I might be inclined to agree if there was a problem with all the burns but I have found three bad disc in the past dozen burns. And I don't believe it is three in a row. I haven't changed anything so how would it get "untweaked"?
it could be a bad batch of media but it could also be a setting that can be resolved, please post last section of your Nero logfile and i'll teleport this thread into the Nero forum
Sorry, I have been away from the computer. First, I have successfully backed up about 10 titles since I posted so I lean toward a media problem. It would seem to me if a setting were wrong, it would cause a problem with all the discs? So if I sen the most recent log even if it is a successful burn you can glean information? I’m not sure if I know how to access the log but I shall go exploring. Don
if it's Nero 6, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar. if it's Nero 7, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C80' or similar. either way you can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"
It's the media. Especially when you say the bad ones are bad at the same place. 2-5 minutes in, etc. Take a look at the bad discs if you still have them. You will see imperfections in the discs, the dye will look funny in certain areas. You can pretty much see where it is corrupting. Look at the ones you have left, more than likely if any of them look funny they will be the ones you have problems with. Get yourself some TY brother : )
Thanks, Doug TY on order I had one that had a definite defect in the dye but two of them looked fine. Don
