I have a utility called movieidw.exe and when I dropped one particular MPG file, it gave, among other things, the following info:

    File Format: MPEG-1 System Stream
    Content: Video and Audio
    Data Rate: 1316 kbps (ave)
    Video Info: 352 x 240, 29.970 fps
Audio Info: 48000 Hz, 131.1 kbps, stereo
    Audio Format: MPEG-1 Layer 2

Can anyone provide a summary of the more common values that might appear for each of these and how to deal with them (i.e. when it comes to encoding and/or burning)? What values should I look for to ensure the MPG is "DVD compliant"?

One thing I picked up from the AfterDawn guide is that fps should be 25.00, 23.97, or 29.97 (or a neaby number).

    Many thanks,

    Ken

Thank you. Some follow up questions...

    1. My DVD player plays NTSC format only. Does this mean that if a video on my hard drive is 25fps that I cannot burn it, or will it get converted into the proper fps when I select the NTSC format at the encoding stage?

Also, with regard to the following bits and pieces of information regarding the video:

    File Format: MPEG-1 System Stream
    Content: Video and Audio
    Data Rate: 1316 kbps (ave)
    Video Info: 352 x 240, 29.970 fps
Audio Info: 48000 Hz, 131.1 kbps, stereo
    Audio Format: MPEG-1 Layer 2

    2. Can someone provide me with information (or a link) to file formats (e.g. MPEG-1), data rates (e.g. 1316kbs), video sizes (e.g. 352x240), audio info (e.g. 28000 Hz, 131.1 kbs, stereo), and audio formats (MPEG-1 Layer 2)?

The values for these categories will have certain ramifications I imagine, while others may not be important.

    3. Can I combine videos with different video sizes (e.g. 352x240, 480x360, 320x240, 400x300, 720x480) on the same DVD? Since I have a normal TV, am I restricted to files with a 4:3 aspect ratio? Can this be fixed during encoding/burning?

    4. Which values (e.g. aspect ratio, fps, etc.) can be "corrected" (i.e. made to conform to the desired value during encoding) and which cannot?

    Many thanks,

    Ken

Another source of info is this site:
    http://www.videohelp.com/

On the left you'll see a heading "What Is" with buttons underneath
    DVD SVCD VCD Glossary

in the descriptions for SVCD VCD etc. it covers things such as
NTSC and PAL formats. There are conversion tool guides there also.

It's good to look at several sources of info to get perspective. Also
you can google on DVD FAQ and SVCD FAQ etc. for more info on video formats. Same with audio.

That helped significantly. OK, let me focus my question more. My DVD player plays NTSC format only. When I check the video info and look at the various specs mentioned above of the different MPG, WMV, ASF, and/or AVI videos on my hard drive, how can I tell which ones I will successfully be able to convert and burn?

    Thanks again,

    HP
