swap ps3 drive

    hi,

    question to i can get a ps3 80gb cechh02 which just needs a bluray drive. can i use a drive out of a 40gb cechh02 model. would it be a simple unplug the side 4 pin cable and swap

    No, it won't work that easily. The drive model isn't the same and also the drive and the main board need to fit, they have an unique code.

    Yes but i read on the net they both use the same blu ray controller board model

    The 40 GB and the 60 GB model use the same board, the 80 GB has a different one. If you get your hands on one model from another 40 Gb or a 60 Gb model drive you have to swap the drive boards too, it won't be as easy as unplug and replug.

    Also if you are on a hacked firmware you could get an identical drive and do the remarry process. It is easier to just swap control boards IMO. The only time I see the remarry useful is if the control board is shot.
