How to fix (requires a windows xp, vista, or win7 system with a free SATA port):

Remove drive from system, connect to PC.
Boot up PC, find Command Prompt in start menu, and right-click on it; select "Run as Administrator"

Once in the command prompt, type the following without the "" marks.
    "diskpart"
    "list disk"

-now it should give you a list of disks...write down what one is the PS3 disk (usually identified by capacity) IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO GET THE CORRECT DISK; THIS TOOL IS VERY DANGEROUS IF MISUSED; IT CAN WIPE YOUR WHOLE SYSTEM IN A MATTER OF SECONDS

    back to the prompt:
"select disk 1" - replace the "1" with whatever number the PS3 drive is.
    "clean"
    "create partition primary"
    "select partition 1"
    "active"
    "assign"
    "exit"
    "exit"

Now shut down the PC and reinstall the drive in the PS3...the update should now work.
