Taiyo Yuden or Memorex?

I am new to the boards and new to backing up dvds. I have downloaded ANYDVD, CLONEDVD, and DVD DECRYPTER. My next task is to get DVD+Rs. I have seen on the boards that alot of people like the Taiyo Yuden discs. I tried Memorex and each and everyone of the backups played for maybe 15-20 minutes and started to lock up and skip. So I really need to pick out a new disc to purchase. Just wanted to know what everyone likes as far as the different brands go before I make a decision and go buy more discs.

It's mostly Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim as the #1 choice here, but for brick and mortar stores, you can try Fuji ('Made in Japan' ones are Taiyo Yuden), TDK, Maxell, and Sony. If you're buying online, you might consider picking up Ritek Ridata media from Newegg.com.

Here are what I've used and prefer them as in order:

    01) Taiyo Yuden (including both Fuji and Sony "Made In Japan")
    02) Maxell 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan"
    03) Verbatim

Those are some top notch media you can find easily at your local stores and online.

i totally agree.. i havent used the TY's but a lot of people here swear by them.. maxell are very good.. i got some RW's.. flawless burn.

my main dvds are verbatims.. i luv them

just remember to stay away from memorex... about 90-95% if not more... of ppl here... will tell you the same about memorex

    Memosux!!!!!!!!

    What's your burner's brand name and model#?

I do prefer the plus format, using local on sale media.
The maxell +8x and sony+1x-8x are very good from both japan and taiwan. Ritek makes the taiwanese maxells:Ritek-r03, and sony makes the taiwanese sony's:-SonyD11

Taiyo yuden makes the japanese sony and fuji +1x-8x: Yuden000-T02.
Hitachi makes the Japanese maxell +8x.

Also verbatim data life plus +8x are very sweet! MCC-003 for their MID code.

Some burners may not like them,so your model # will help out.

Are these issues on your stand alone player or on your pc while you view them?

Stick with great media...Taiyo Yuden, Verbatims, Maxell. I get my Taiyo Yudens from supermediastore.com and never have a problem. These guys know what there talking about and I quickly became a believer. Simply put: DO NOT use memorex.

    Yup we all will agree
    Taiyo Yuden.
    Verbatium
    or Ritek
and buying them online is vey easy supermediastore.com ,meritline.com or rima.com all are great retailers

a couple other hints when buring also is
burn at 4X max. and if your going to use DVD plus R booktype them to DVD-ROM making them MORE compatable with all standalone dvd players

well first post for me but i have to disagree about memorex i think it depends on how you burn your movies cuz i been using them for some time now with my lite-on(1633) and Benq(DW1620) and had no problems yet .i'm not an expert on this but it all depends on your settings and hardware.i only use vervatim and memorex and i only had a few coasters in a long time.

I appreciate all the comments. Saugmon, my burner is a Sony. And it is an issue with my dvd player and not my pc. I am going to get some discs today so i am going to purchase a small pack of Verbatims and a small pack of sonys, to try out first. Try to get a feel for what my dvd player likes and dislikes, and if anyone knows, I have a Sony 5-disc dvd changer. Hopefully I will have time to try them out tonight or tomorrow. 72 hours at work this week can tire a person out. Thanks for the suggestions, I will try a few and see which ones work. I'll post again when I find out.

the Verbatiums are great if your going to buy sony try to get the ones that are Made In Japan (which will be better quality) either or should work fine in your sony standalone player
remember burn at 4X max. for best results

    dssacer,

The problem with memorex is they buy their media from the lowest bidder (they don't make any of their own) and you never know what you're going to get from batch to batch. You might get good budget media one time made by ritek or ricohjpn and then get cmc magnetics which is total garbage the next times. There is no way of telling and it is not worth the gamble to me and most here especially when I can buy top quality media that I know who made for about the same price.

I'll stick with my verbatums and TY's.

    Mort

Note: If you memorex's are cmc mag and they burned and play ok, give them 6 months or so and I bet they won't.

@dssacer, I had the same feeling in the beginning, yet after a month and trying to watch my back-up. Freeze, skip and just became un-watchable. I quickly learned from the guys at AD about great media and became an instant believer. I burn at 4x or slower and never have a problem, except for user interference (me!). I will encourage you to use what works for you, just be aware of possible disappointment down the road. We are all here to help and learn.

Have to put in my 2cents here, most here, including myself have learned about the importance of quality media. I only use +RW media, I have discovered most of my blanks are made by Ricoh (with dvd identifier). I have backed up over 600 dvds in about 18 months, with no probs yet!
Most people here have burnt thousands of dvds, I am a rank amateur by comparison, so they have an inkling what they are talking about!
