Taiyo Yuden+supermediastore and still a problem

I purchased 200 of what supermediastore bills as:Taiyo Yuden genuine 4X DVD-R media Silver in Tape Wrap.

I had good results on my panasonic dvdrecorder so purchased another 200. The second two hundred have been a problem. About 30% coasters...and unfortunately, the Panasonic finalizes the disc and to my surprise, most would not play in my dvd players. Some of these discs would play on the Panasonic though although a larger number of them wouldn't. The Panasonic would tell me the discs are incompatible in spite of having finalizing them.

I have not any problems of this sort with the dvdrecorder before. Over one thousand dubs in less than 6 months. Once or twice a freeze-up from some prodiscs but that's about all. I was interested in trying the tapewrap since Panasonic told me that spindles are tending to warp some discs. But the tape wrap hasbeen nothing but trouble.

I have a tech friend in silicone valley who has had the same problem with these Taiyo Yudens and unfortunately, only after it happened to both of us. I am moving to Verbatim but was interested if anyone could shed light on this Taiyo Yuden situation.

I would venture to say it's a firmware problem rather than a media problem. Really not enough info to give a definitive analysis...

 

might be a bad batch of those TYs from supermediastore as others have mentioned a few "bad apples" here and there from time to time...i guess i have been lucky with mine, but a "bad batch" is VERY possible, even with such high quality as the Taiyo Yudens

 

My bad... Just realized that you were using a DVR and not a burner...

 

I agree with you kivory666. Spoke to Supermediastore yesterday who have offered a credit upon return and they believe it is a bad batch. They themselves expect 2% defection from this stock. My chagrin is that it just wasn't one package and the duds do not run throughout but here and there, like one out of four, in a pack of a hundred.

Never having difficulties like this with either Prodisc or Phillips or TDK or Fiji, I feel totally disgruntled having "stepped up" to Taiyo Yudens. So it is off to Verbatim. And I have found some good pricing, a rebate from Supermediastore as well as low pricing (along with a coupon and free shipping) from Buy.com.

My decision is whether to ship the 300 Taiyo Yuden's back to supermediastore or continue playing russian roulette with them.

Send them back. Verbs are a good choice. Personally, I'd take replacements for the TY's. Your incident is very RARE! TY's are excellent media. If you look hard enough, you will find a small amount of users with bad experiences with Verbatim as well. The bottom line is this: TY is THE best. PERIOD. Give 'em another shot, and you will not be disappointed... Check out Rima.com for your TY's as well if you wanna get away from this "batch."

I will try rima.com in the future. In the meanwhile, I have 200 verbatims, 100 ritekridata,
and 200 prodiscs coming which should hold me for awhile.

I live in NYC and sending back the 200 remaining Taiyo Yudens is a thorough pain. Our
post offices have been hell since 9/11...so it's a toss-up between that and playing hit and
miss on the remaining 200 discs. What would make up my mind is if I knew that those
faulty discs are bad for the dvdrecorder.

But I appreciate your input...it's been helpful.
