    2 Questions:
1.I use TY 8X DVD+R media and am burning at 4X. Is this the optimal speed for my burner/media setup?
2.If i start buying TY 16X DVD+R what would be the optimal burn setup.

    What burner do you have?

Yuden000-T02:On my plextor 716A or any of my Benqs, 8x should be no trouble. My Benqs could even overburn those 8x yudens at 16x if I desired. 8x should be safe for them.

Ty 16x= Yuden000-T03:I haven't gotten a hold of any. I'd try various speeds on a few backups, test them out in nero's quality disc scanning program and keep the burn speed from the best scan.

On my HP 640c, Half of them would coaster out at any speed, LOL.

Some say slower the better, but I find it the opposite when you have quality burners to go along with the Top quality media like Ty and Verbatim. These high quality discs were designed to be burned faster. Slow burning can cause issues and the scans will show you.

    http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#DRU-710A

    Rebadged Liteon SOHW-1633s/1653s

Slightly different firmware when compared to the Litey drive.

There's a lot of feedback from fellow Sony Dru-710 owners:

    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters/sony-dru-710a/692

There's also a media rating for the drive, but nobody left any rating for Yuden000-T03. Excellent rating for the Fuji Yuden000-T02.Latest feedback over a year old.

It's an older drive,so you may have to update the firmware if you encounter any issues with the Yuden000-T03. You may want to try to stick with the Yuden000-T02 if you can find them. They've been extinct in my realm for well over a year-but I got 300 stashed away!!. Some sony and Fuji were made by Taiyo Yuden and were very good at 8x. Their spindles would say Made in Japan, whereas the non tys were made in taiwan.

I dont really know if this is the correct place for this but can i change the firmware on my sony 710 A to that of the lite-on becasue sony firmware doesnt change the bitsetting on IMG burn automatically from DVD+R to DVD-ROM and i believe the lite-on does.

What's the current firmware version of your sony?

I read someone mentioning that in one of the feedbacks of the videohelp link I posted-here's a couple:

[bold]The only upside to this piece of crap is that since it's acually 3 drives (by 2 different companies) and all three can be flashed back and forth to eachother via secondary software (just don't use other drives firmware - you'll kill your drive w/o using programs like OmniFlash correctly)[/bold]

[bold]I updated to the latest firmware, now nero automatically bitset my dvd+r to dvd-rom. i didn't know it could do that, till my games & movies played in my xboxes with samsung & thomson drive.
one more thing, some disc don't write at their potential speed, sometimes a 8x disc would be burnt at 4x or 6x. Even i like this drive a lot, it's going to be my last Sony burner i'm going to buy, only because i know this is the best it can get.[/bold]

I didn't find much over at cdfreaks.com,but this 1 thread:

So will using the lite-on 1633S or 1653S firmware on my sony dru 710A automatically bitset my drive to DVD-ROM when using IMG burn. If so which firmware do use the one of the lite-on or the sony "patched" firmware. I am a bit confused!!!

    burn the DVD+R TYGO2s at 8x max

burn the DVD+R TYGO3s at 8x also you may be able to go 12x check them doing a nero scan at both speeds
