    ok,
    my desktop, windows 98, with a lite-on 1673 burner
it's taking forever to encode, over an hour.
i right clicked my computer, went under cd rom, and checked for enabled DMA on the burner and the DVD ROM drives.

they are already set for dma, so how do i check to see if dma is the problem or if it is something else???

    i use shrink and decrypter.
it takes forever, whether i use one drive or both drives together.

    any ideas?
    thx

in device manager, i unchecked dma for all cd drives, restarted, and when i checked again, dma was already checked.

is dma the reason it takes an hour or more to get past the encoding portion, or is it something else?

    thx

Just out of curiosity what kind of times are you expecting? Running Windows 98 I'm guessing your PC specs aren't all that great.

And you need to be more specific. What settings are you using in Shrink? Are you using deep analysis? Any Quality Enhancements?

I had an old P3 Gateway w/ 384MB SDRAM and using Shrink w/ deep analysis would take about 90 minutes (I believe)

So what are your system specs?

it's a dell dimension, p3 (i believe), 512k memory (need to bump that up, i'm sure).
i just went back and checked the dvds i've tried to backup using the desktop new lite-on burner, and every dvd has come out crap, it freezes up and is choppy.
i'm currently using tdk 8x, and have verbatims on the way.
but the laptop has burned a ton of the tdks with no problems at all, and i'm pretty sure the laptop has a much crappier burner.
i got the latest firmware for the lite-on, so i'm not sure what else the problem could be. it clearly states that the 1673 is compatable with win 98
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106964
so i'm not sure if it is a bad burner, or if it is just the media it doesn't like.
only other blank dvd i currently have is memorex 4x, which is worse than the tdk
i guess i could stop and get a better brand dvd +r and try that once more before i yank the burner and return it, if it isn't too late to get newegg to replace it.

i just have the basic settings, no deep analysis, no quality enhancements, i usually just do the main movie and cut out all other languages.
been working fine on tha laptop.
maybe it's taking forever to encode on the desktop because the burner is bad???
maybe if i upgrade to win 2000 it will fix the problem???

Sorry to hear your long burning times. As you can see, I'm not a Win 98 users, thus I can't really give you any feedback on this. Hopefully, another 98 user will be able to help you with better results.

I'm using XP and when I performed a dvd back up; DVD Shrink usually takes around 22 - 25 mins to compress for a "FULL DISC" [no deep analysis, no enhance quality] and DVD Decrypter usually burned with 8X at around 8 - 9 mins of a successfully backed up for me. Overall, it's roughly somewhere from 30 - 35 mins. In contrast, like Flip218 said; with better os specs with higher processor and more ram you'll be somewhere in the 30 - 45 margin. This is either a "main title" or "full disc" only without any "deep analysis or quality enhancements" whatsoever.

i never do deep analysis, and rarely do full disc
the laptop is quicker than before, but the highest write speed is 2.5x

the desktop liteon hasn't gone above about 1.5x on write speed
no idea how to change that,
i guess i need to upgrade to win 2000 and try a better media before i swap out the liteon 1673
    pain in the butt

got it from newegg a month ago
it came with j02 firmware, i upgraded it to j07 when i got it.
haven't been able to make one good backup with it, should have verbatims to work with tuesday to try those out, hope that is what the problem is, liteon not liking the tdk dvds, but the laptop has no problems with the tdk +r
