yeah theres no 2 ways about this debate....
if you dont mind paying for TY (which i dont think is much different from song or tdk in price)
then go for TY, they are flawless
they are the only safe bet for disks nowdays

I have been using Verbatim's (MCC ID code) flawlessly for quite a while now, close to 500 burns error-free. The Sam's by me has 50 pks of 4X for only $18.63 regular priced.

Ok I bought the SONY DVD-R 50pack from Best Buy last night since it was only $20. And I used this blank disc to make back up copy of PS2 game (JAK 3)and it works nicely with my PS2 ver.4 without any problems and also back up movie Troy using Shrink and Nero method without any problem as well. Despite of many complaints about SONY disc, this batch works out nicely for me.

    Kinza,
I bought 50 pack DVD-R from bestbuy for $20 just before christmas. They were made in Japan but the DVD+Rs I found were made in taiwan. I can find this on the label on the DVD spindle. Here is the info given for the sony DVD+R by DVD identifier

    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:SONY08D1]

    Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Sony Recording Media Co.]
    Manufacturer ID : [SONY08D1]
    Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4,489.3MB = 4.38GB (4.71GB)]
    Recording Speeds : [1x , 2x , 4x , 6x , 8x]

I have used about 40 of them so far and not even one coaster. all burns were successful and all the backup DVDs play perfectly in my pioneer dvd player. I always burn at 4x though the discs are recommended for up to 8X. [bold]Bottomline:Go for sony only if the label says "made in Japan"

If you can't decide on what media to buy, why not check your manual they always have recommended media. Mine recommends Maxell, TY, or JVC for -R media, all of which have worked flawlessly for me. For other fomats they recommend completely different brands so I don't think they are biased to recommend certain media, they probably recommmend what works best and I agree with the choices so far.

    kinza...

i was at my local best buy today and the sony dvd+r 50pks i saw were made in taiwan as well. interstingly enough, they had two different sony dvd-r 50pks. one pack was for the 4x discs and the other for the 8x packs. the sony 4x dvd-r packs were made in taiwan, whereas the 8x packs were made in japan. also, i noticed most of the manufacturers of dvd+r that best buy carried were all made in taiwan.

at any rate, i've gone throuh 95 of the sony 4x dvd-r and, though made in taiwan, haven't had any problems w/ burns or playback on three different stand alone players. i did have one coaster, but that was by fault of my own. they've performed quite well for. i've yet to open, and try, one of the 8x packs i have. but from what you guys have said, and my experience w/ sony media thus far, i don't expect any problems.

Update on my SONY DVD-R 50 pack bundle that I bought from Best Buy, I burnt over 20 blank DVD-Rs from this batch and no coaster yet and working good on my three different dvd players (Denon, Pioneer, and CAV). I went over to Best Buy and bought three more 50 packs of SONY DVD-R 4X blanks. It is made in Taiwan but so far working good for me.

Had bought several spindles of Sony DVD-R and loved them, notice I said loved. Have been having problems with them lately in my Toshiba player (SD3950 I think) and I ran the dvd identifier and found them to be TYGO1 now instead of the Sony media code so I won't buy them any more. I would like to say that s**t is getting old this is the third time I have switched media these guys need to knock this off.

Thanks everyone. The spindle I purchased was Made in Japan and I said before was the last one. Only when getting home did I realize they were 8x. They are working great although I did have an NFSU2 backup coaster. Don't know why.

I have just begun burning DVD's about two months ago and tried some really cheap store brand media at first and had horrible results. I checked this board and found out that Sony discs where one of the recomemnded brands. I have now burned through one stack of 50 sony DVD-R without a single bad disc in the bunch. In fact this week January 9-15, 2005 CompUSA has a sale on a 100 pack spindle of Sony DVD-R for 39.99. I bought two spindles. I have been very happy using the Sony DVD-r with DVD Shrink and DVD Copy Express. I have been able to compress disc to as low as 55% using DVD shrink and get excellent quality playback on my 32 inch screen TV. That is just my opinion.

    kinza,
The DVD-R were madein japan but DVD+Rs were made in taiwan. but i guess alldepends on your localbestbuy store.the store i bought the Japan made DVD-Rs has only Taiwan made DVD+r and DVD-R now.no more made in Japan... as a matter of fact no "made in japan"from any manufacturer. they have TDKand FUJI but allmade in taiwan. As i said before the FUJI 50pack I bought with my burner were prodisc {taiwan} but I have no coasters yet....my only concern is how long will they last before they ruin.... so far both FUJI and SONY DVD-Rs play really good on my pioneer HTD-510DV system without any freezing or lack of quality. I use DVD shrink and DVD decrypter

if you are concerned about good media I would recommend ritek or taiyo Yuden from meritline.com or supermediastore.com....
