First, I want to thank everyone on this site that has helped me out the past week or so. You've been a big help and ShrinkDVD, DVDencounter (although I get errors now and then during the recording) and CloneDVD blow Roxio out of the water for making copies. That brings me to my question- alot of the DVDs I burned using Roxio don't play right. Some skip chapters when playing- it's come to the end of a chapter, freeze and then skip ahead a chapter. Others freeze when trying to rewind or fast forward. Still others just plain freeze at certain points and you can't get to the chapters after that. I was hoping to just use decrypter or clone dvd to "re-burn" these movies since I don't have some of the originals anymore (alot of the DVDs I burned were movies I borrowed from my brother, and OF COURSE the movies that copied fine are the ones I already have). When I try CloneDVD it says unexpected error when I try to open the DVD. DVDShrink says Invalid DVD Navigational Structure when trying to open it. Half the time I use Decrypter it will decrypte it fine (supposedly) but when I try burning it says there are errors. Is there a program that can "repair" or "restore" the movie files on these DVDs so that I can burn them to a new DVD? Thanks again for all the help. I sure wish I found this site a LONG TIME AGO!
If you are having a hard time opening the dvd, that usually means that there was some type of write error when you initially burned the movie. I am not sure if there is a way to repair this without having the original, but I think DVD Decrypter has an option to ignor errors when making images. You can try that and see if it helps, but wait for a few more responses as someone else will probably think of something better.
Hi 2talll, It sounds like a media issue. By using poor quality media to make your copies on, the files have not been transferred as they should especially around the discs outside edges where the dye is uneven or even absent. Remember the old saying, "Garbage in, garbage out ?" That's what we have here. Something like CDCheck cannot repair something that isn't there. I suggest borrowing those DVD's again and adjusting your DVD Target size to: "Custom" 4360MB, burning at 4X and on decent media. As for quality, A good grade, Hi-quality media is needed for DVD reproduction ! Phillips, Fuji +R's (not the -R's UNLESS they are made in Japan), Sony, TDK, HP, "Branded" RiData Go3's, Maxell +R (not the -R's as they cannot be trusted), Sony, Ritek G04 and G05's (not the 01's or the 02's), Verbatim - DataLife, Verbatim - DataLife Plus and media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO" BUT, it must say "Advanced METAL AZO", this indicates a superior dye and dye application on a good composite disc.As a general rule, the majority of discs manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi, RICOH and most Ritek are good bets. Look closely at those discs we recommended, you will see some dye types not listed by us. Those are poor risks even though they are made by the same company. Prices online from SuperMediaStore.com, Meritline.com OR Newegg.com have gotten Ritek G04 starting at about a $ .36 (USD) a disc - and just recently, a "Super Sale" had 100 Taiyo Yuden discs, 4X for $.25(USD)ea. PLUS they all have an excellent return policy. For the best online media stores to shop, try - Mertline.com http://meritline.com/ Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-132-344&depa=0 And, Supermediastore.com http://www.supermediastore.com/media1.html I hope this is of some help, Pete
Sorry, 2talll, I forgot to give you the link for CDCheck though I doubt it will help in this case, it's an excellent proggy and no one should be without it - CD Check: http://www.elpros.si/CDCheck/ Cheers, Pete
It's not the DVD+R's I used- it happened on several different types- even Fuji and Sony ones. The files are there because if I'm really patient I can find everything (although some chapters got burned as different titles) it's just that it's not a "seamless" file for lack of a better descritpion. I'm also starting to think that my DVD player is part of the problem. Although some of the DVDs don't play right on my laptop either, a lot of them mess up in my DVD player but work fine in my laptop. Think I need to get a new DVD player- I'm sure the quality has increased since I bought it 5 years ago. Maybe that'll help, and I'll try the suggestions listed. Thanks for the help. I'm going to have to work on it tomorrow- with all the fireworks going off behind my house and in front of my house I've got a giant headache. And to make it worse, the cops will come by with their sirens going (duh!) so when the neighbors hear the sirens they run inside and come back out and start again 15-20 minutes later. Wouldn't it make more sense to keep the sirens off?
Again, I don't believe even CDCheck will help you. Repair proggys are designed to repair a faulty file not rearrange files with no correct format to compare it to Especially if Roxio did it's neato thing and renamed some (a common Roxio trademark). If you weren't aware, Roxio doesn't play well with other backup proggys. About the only ones it does work with is DVD Shrink and DVD Decypter. It has issues with CloneDVD2 and will totally destroy Nero Roxio is, considered by many, one of the worst program you can have on your PC if you wish to work with DVD Video. True, there are a very few pple who have them both on their PC BUT by far, the vast majority of pple who have had them both on their PC's have had major headaches and have had to get rid of Roxio. As I'm sure any search through our threads will show you it's a wise decision. Even getting rid of Roxio is a problem as it weaves itself all through your system and you require a special proggy to get rid of it even after you've uninstalled it. Many have had trouble burning that can be traced to our archenemy Roxio's CD-Creator or one of his evil henchmen. Don't bother with Roxio's uninstall proggy, it doesn't even come close to getting the job done. The best way to rid our selves of Roxio is remove him through "Control Panel", then select "Add and Remove Programs". After you've done that, don't be a thinkin' that you're finished, you haven't gotten all of Roxio at all. Actually, you'll need to run this in order to be completely free from this "puppy" ~ Remove all types of Roxio tentacles and tendrils that are throughout your registry and system in general with Roxio Zapper ~ Find it here: http://www.microadvantage.net/downloads/zapper60.zip Once you've done that, reboot your PC to "flush everything out of your PC's system I hope this is of some help. Pete
THanks ScubaPete, I'm downloading it right now. Maybe that has something to do with the problems I've been having with my computer as a whole. I'm contemplating doing a full system restore because I've got a lot of minor problems with windows, iTunes, etc. Usually uninstalling Roxio fixed most of these types of problems, but they are still here. I had Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator and Roxio Easy DVD Copy on my computer, so hopefully running the program you suggested will save me from running the restore.
Could this be part of the problem, just a crazy thought? Could there be a "mess-up" transferring the files from my external hard drive to the DVD-burner or even when I am shrinking the files? IIRC, alot of the DVDs I had the errors with and the ones that don't play right (I have a handful of DVDs that are all scrambled) are the ones that I put on my EHD when decrytping or when I compressed the file. Just a thought.
another question yet. I just checked out the cd check what functionality do you find useful with such a program what type of errors will it repair. jus wondering
Hey 2 Talll, I don't think so my friend ~ I have 4 Drives, 2-indoors and 2-outside, I also have 4 HD's, the same thing, 2-inside, 2-outside. It is common for me to use 1 HD with an inside fryer and an inside toaster with an outside HD. The only thing I've ever seen problems with is - when a M/B was only capable of handling 132GB HD and had a 200GB HD on it. This happens when a PC came originally with win '98 and was then upgraded to XP. The M/B can only support a 120GB HD internally for either a C:\ or a D:\ otherwise, there shouldn't be any issues UNLESS they are connected via a 1.0 USB connection instead of a 2.0 USB connector. Cheers, Pete @ l8nights, If you have a corruped file or one, two or three missing, CDCheck can usally repair it, n/p. If you have a bad download it, like any other proggy, it cannot undue something like that. Damage within reason would be the word. I would say, give it a "read" on the page I linked to it. If you have a problem, use it ~ if it can be fixed, I've found that this proggy can do it. Cheers, Pete
also 2Tall you might try installing nero and trying it instead of roxio. nero is a MUCH better burn tool than roxio and burn at 4x max.
WHat's the difference between the free download and the $80 one you buy? Couldn't find the difference on the page you linked.
OK, thanks. And thanks to the person that suggested CDCHeck- it didn't work on any of my messed up copies YET (it was taking hours and hours and I had other stuff to d oso I had to cancel- gotta have it run overnight I guess) but it did fix an original that I was trying to copy that kept freezing on one section during the analysis in DVDShrink and while trying to make an ISO using decrypter.
In regard to purchasing Nero, u can always find a deal on e-bay. I purchased my software, which very importantly, included the serial number/product key for less than half the price and I have had no problems. U can update constantly from the Nero site after installation.
You can get Nero OEM Suite 3 for $8.00 shipped. Be sure to get Suite 3, though. Suites 1 & 2 do not include Recode2. http://surpluscomputers.com/store/main.aspx?p=ItemDetail&item=SWW12252 I've purchased from them. Genuine software with product keys/registration. No complaints. AND they will sell this to you without you making a hardware purchase...
If you have not used problematic discs, check if all files are present on the disc (ifo's, vob's, and bup's). If it is so then rip your firdt generation copy to hard disc and reauthor the disc using lower speed for burning (I suggest no more than 4X, max 6X for use in latest stand alone players). I assumed that the originals didn't have any kind of special protection which requires extra software for their surpassing.
