Ive only posted a few times, but lurk on the forums frequently. Whenever Ive had problems - either minor or major catastrophies, I have always managed to find the answers here by using the search function. So I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the mods and helpers for their knowledge and problem solving. You all do a great job. Also a special mention to the various authors of the guides. I recently discovered the Dvd decrypter guide. Stuff like that takes patience and dedication to put together. Kudos to you all. On the flipside, please be patient with the newbies. I have been a computer user for only 2 years. A 'friend' set up my dialup connection, email and anti virus for me on day one. The anti virus was a pirated copy and seriously out of date. Within the first 12 hours, my brand new comp was infested with hundreds of pop-ups and trojans. 'Friend' was uncontactable. I managed to find a tech forum, and with their help was able begin the process of getting the comp operating normally. There were times when my comp was so useless I had to resort to using a public comp. It took 3 months of massive research on my part to completely clean it. Im embarrassed to say that I was so illiterate that I didnt know about the search function on forums, and didnt know how to copy/paste. I cringe now when I think back to how green I was. Im also grateful to the helpers on that tech site. Not only for their invaluable guidance, but that they resisted the urge to publicly point out what a stupid newbie I was. I learnt so much in those first few months and will continue to learn thanks to all the very knowledgeable helpers, especially at AD. None of us will ever know everything about computers/software, as it is continually evolving. I didnt learn about computers at school (Im in my 40's), but last week I did hear a 20-something ask who the hell was Pythagoras and had a laugh to myself. Thanks again for your excellent site and expert help
Well thank you. It's actually a rare quality around here to be thanked.I'm glad you search before you ask because it makes it so much more easy on the rest of us "helpers". Get avast antivirus for a great free solution.Others may say avg.antivirus as well. We try to take it easy on the noobs, hey everyone was a noob once.Well anyways I'm glad to hear you've learned so much here.I share your feelings.
thanks for you reply tycobb. I can also see that some newbies can 'push the friendship' somewhat though. Can generally tell from their posts and the context of some questions as to whether they have had enough experience to research themselves. I meant to also add that perhaps a sticky could be posted on every forum page titled "Newbies guide to using search function".
thats a good idea, but even though it would be there i wonder how many would look at it. tis a good idea though.
Well I have to admit your right. Some truley are noobs and need help but others are just to lazy to do a little research and help themselves. LOL I hope not. They should be able to use the search function without it but ,I know what you mean.
Or possibly in a slightly sneaky way... a sticky titled "Newbies, almost all your problems solved here" which then links directly to the search page.
Hi bellarine, Glad you're liking it here and don't be a stranger Off topic but I think I need to stand on tycobb and poke him with a stick - what do you all think?
poke away Neph, LOL not really, well just a little bit. @bellarine - hi and welcome, good to see someone else here that's of mine and Neph's age group ).
You need to spare tycobb - at least for the moment. He's just way too handy around here answering newbie posts.
Most of the stickies in the sub-forums contain information that a search would turn up an answer to as well but are overlooked still...if they don't read the stickies that are already there I doubt they would read one about searching...welcome to AD Why are the mods here so mean?
