    Hi all,
For years I've used DVDShrink for backing-up and ripping DVD's but since moved to Vista the program simply does not work. Searching for solutions I finally concluded that my old DVDShrink will never work again.
So in search for alternatives I ran into the following (pay)sites:
    (1) http://www.official-dvdshrink.org/
This site is actually claiming to have a Vista compatible 2010 version of DVDShrink. First I was happy to find something familiar but franky I have no clue whether this is real or fake. Can one of you tell me if this is real and useful software?

    (2) The afterdawn newsletter pointed me to some alternatives:
    Software from this site http://www.slysoft.com/
Looks good despite that you have to use AnyDVD in combination with CloneDVD.

    (3) Then I searched for 'CloneDVD region free' and ran into this site:
    http://www.clonedvd.net/
And now I get suspicious and ask myself why using two programs from Slysoft if this software has it all in one.

Bottom line,I need some advice from you experts:
Which of the 3 alternatives is real and proper software for backing-up/ripping DVD's?
What is currenlty the best alternative for DVDShrink which can run on Vista?

Thank you so much for your support...

There is no 2010 version of dvd shrink....it is a fake!! You can use dvd shrink with vista. You need to log in under administrator, and run the program under compatibility mode to get dvd shrink to work.

You can also used anydvd running in the background with dvd shrink to handle the encryptions on the movies you are trying to back up.

You can also use DVDFab decrypter, which has a free version to download to rip the disks before hand and then using dvd shrink to compress.

    Thanks for your reply rtm27.

I try to run it as admin but still I get the message "DVDshrink stopped working" and if I try to change the compatibility I can't find Vista in the menu.

Can you help me out on this one?

When you access compatibility mode, you choose "run as windows xp" from the drop down menu. Accept, and you should be able to run it then.

    Hi Mrguss,
    Thanks for your reply.

I have used the version on the link and still Vista comes up with the message "DVDShrink stopped working" even before finalising the installation.
I also made an exception rule in DEP but without the desired result.

    Any suggestions?

Go with the Slysoft combo. I won't run a product down on suspicion but it's kinda odd for two products to have the same name unless it's to trick people and I know Slysoft is legit. DVD Fab (paid) is a single program: http://www.dvdfab.com/ and there are others.

If you insist to use DVD Shrink: Uninstall DVD Shrink a 100%....How:

1.- Erase the DVD Shrink exe.
Click Start and on "Start Search Box" Write: Prefetch and a folder will show up > Double Click the Prefetch Folder > find the DVD Shrink 3.2 exe File > Right Click on it and hit Delete.

    2.- Uninstal DVD Shrink Program:
Start > Control Panel > Double click Programs and Features > find DVD Shrink File > Left click once then right click once and hit Uninstall.

    3.- Re-Install a 100% Fresh Program of DVD Shrink.

    Hope this help.

    @ mistycat:
Thanks for mentioning DVDFab as alternative, I will give it a try. Hopefully it is as easy as DVDShrink.
From what I read it surely looks promissing...

    @ Mrguss:
Thanks again for your support; I have followed your instruction, reboot before reinstalling a fresh version but...the same message popped up even before finalising: "DVDShrink stopped working".

What can I do now to make it work?

    Hi all,
Not giving up on searching for an alternative I ran into DVD Cloner 7 (http://www.dvd-cloner.com/).

When I read about this it appears to be the #1.

Is this really the case? Can one of you provide me with some feedback?

    Thanks a lot.

I wasn't talking about v7 of that software specifically, i've dug out a couple of threads for you ~

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/92001
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/456587

Bascially, the website of dvd-cloner itself should be proof enough to steer clear, the very design/layout smells of spam/scams and inferior software, regardless of any forum threads here talking about it..

edit- as for clonedvd, be careful of the non-Slysoft one, see here ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/201330

Back to your first post above, if you're happy with DVD Shrink it's probably best to just get that working in Vista. I've never used Vista but i can confirm that Shrink most definitely works in Windows 7, see here for that and other Win7 info ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/769480#4661854

Finally, it's been mentioned already but any non-free version of Shrink is fake, see here ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/675820

..i'll add this post to the Ultimate sticky thread so people know to avoid DVD Shrink '2010' as well as the other scam versions.

I have DVD Clone 5 and 6 Programs on a hard disc here (They release a new version once every 2 years I would say).....and I will tell you that is not a match at all with DVDFab or AnyDVD.....they are many months behind on updates ("$60" USA dollars).

Also try this....to link Vista with Shrink: (Same thing as with W-7)
Start > Right Click Computer > Properties > Advance System Settings > Advanced > Performance: Settings... > Data Execution Prevention > check Turn on DEP for all programs except those I select > make sure DVD Shrink 3.2 file Box is check (Tag) > Add... > OK > and finally re-start your PC.

I also have a question for you:
Are you running DVD Fab or AnyDVD before DVD Shrink to back-up new DVD's.....or maybe you just using DVD Shrink by itself ?

Cos the last update of DVD Shrink was made in 2004 and do not handle new encryptions and needs help from more up-to-date programs....you know !

    Hi Mrguss,
As mentioned earlier I have tried the exception rule in DEP and it didn't work out.

Funniest thing is that I have tried some trial versions, like DVDFab, but most of the programs run into reading problems and in a next attempt I have used Nero recode and with excellent compress results.

Do you perhaps know whether you can use Nero recode in combination with AnyDVD to get rid of any protections?

Thanks for the feedback on DVD Cloner and for US$60 I leave it.

    Cheers.

You should be able to use Nero Recode with AnyDVD. If you don't want to spend the money, use DVDFab(the pay for version is a All-in-one package;after the trial is over, you will sill be able to decrypt/rip unlimited, just not to shrink;you can then use nero recode).

    Hi Cyprusrom,
Thanks for the tip but paying is not my problem as long as software keeps working and you have to admit that when DVDFab has reading problems the outcome via Nero recode will be not optimal as well but, on the other hand, this is maybe just a one-time incident which Nero recode ignores.

    Thanks again!

    Cheers.

That'll more likely be down to optical drives, not all are equal, hence why a lot of us regulars have more than one, and of different makes. If a disc doesn't read/rip properly on one drive it'll usually work find on a.n.other optical drive..

    You Welcome.

Nero Recode, Clone DVD2 by Slysoft, DVD Rebuilder or even the all-in-one DVDFab versions are Alternatives for DVD Shrink !

Try to test your Burner with a Old Made Movie. Using a -RW if it is possible and, or External Burner too: just to make sure Vista is working Properly other way you might need to Re-Format.

    Good luck !
