I have a XenoGC, not sure it's the best but it's cheap(15$), easy to install and has always worked great for me(I've had it for about 3-4 months and use it almost every day).
Great if you just want to play games, if you want to develop homebrew apps ,have USB ports or other gadgets, you'll probably want something bigger.
No software is needed with this chip, just install and play.

The best chip is the ViperGC Extreme, as it features the ability to back up games using USB.

The XenoGC is an excellent budget chip that plays back-ups wonderfully. Be warned though, the solder connnections on this chip on tiny, so you need to have a good soldering iron and a steady hand to install it. Also, if you use too much solder, it'll be very easy to make unwanted solder bridges. Use a low wattage iron, and it should be fine. I installed it using a 6 watt battery powered soldering iron. Might not have been the best choice though, since the batteries were pretty much dead, but it did the job.

I myself have a Qoob Pro in my GC, and I installed a XenoGC in my younger brother's GC.
