Just purchased The Box PVR (with disk). Installed disk and formatted, everything was ok until format looked complete when the channel display displayed 'init'. This did not clear after one hour. Checked these forums and decided to try again, this time without the disk, unplugged the disk (interface and power) and turned on the box. 'On', followed by the lines and finally 'init'. Still not got past this message.
Tried plugging into my PC using USB but of course the PC does not recognise the box, probably because it hasn't yet got past the 'init' message.
    Any help anyone?

    Hi
Start from scratch without the hard disk installed. Goto the link below and go into the Starview_PVR folder/Firmware and download 'Box PVR V4.506Oct' and 'PVR Loader'. Then goto the Documentation folder and download the relevant Guides on How too. The when confident install the v4.506 firmware.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have already started from scratch without the hard disk installed (see previous post) but still getting the 'niit' message on the box. I'm downloading the v4.506 firmware now but I'm not confident in installing it if my PC can't see the box....

    Hi
I know you started from scratch without the hard drive I can read but you haven't said that you have installed any software without the hard drive, thats what I am asking you to do.
Just read the guides first and make sure you use a Null Modem Cable between your PC and PVR to do the v4.506 software transfer using the PVR Loader.

I now have a rar file file downloaded and uncompressed and a '.bin' file on my PC. The box is powered on and connected via usb to my PC but I still can not see it using explorer. The box still displays 'init' on the channel display. I have rebooted the box several times. With and without the disk and with and without the usb cable plugged into my PC. What now? Your help is much appreciated.

I have a Toshiba Equum P200 laptop and a Dell Dimension E520. Neither have a serial port. I have what looks like what i know as an old RS232 cable supplied with the box which I presume is null modem.
    1. Is the cable supplied a null modem cable?
    2. Is it possible to do this job without a null modem connection?
    3. Is it normal for the box to display 'init' before the flash or do you think it is faulty?
    4. I have an old Dell laptop, if I dig this out and dust it down and connect using the null modem and download all the software will i get any further?
I appreciate your help but this is incredibly frustrating - two steps forward, one step back!

    Hi
Use the Null modem cable on a PC with a 9 pin com port, forget USB if the PVR won't start properly.

Dug out an old laptop and connected via null modem supplied with box. The key was to press OK->Exit->OK->Exit->OK->Exit ’ on the RCU as soon as the box displayed 'On'. I could then flash the box. Everything looked ok. Rebooted and the same thing, display 'On' followed by lines followed ny 'init'. The box is entirely unresponsive. Have I missed something? Should I now plug into the cable or something?

You said you connected pc to box with cable. If you have flashed the box using the Null modem Cable with 4.506 software and still not working it must be a faulty box.
    Bye

    Hi jb,
OK, rather stupidly I was not plugged into the tv. I expected the 'menu' button to display a menu on the box display. As soon as I was plugged into the tv I was able to follow the user guides and find everything I need. Now I just have one final problem, the sound is terrible. I am connected to the tv using a scart, I have checked and double checked all connections and there is no problem when I revert back to my old N*L box. Is there anything I can do before I buy a new scart cable?

    Hi
Glad you are sorted, if the sound is the same on all the channels then I would suspect your scart lead as being faulty, only way is to try another. There are some RCA phono outputs that have audio feeds on them at the back of the box if you can connect anything up to those temporary

    can anyone help me please.
just had the pvr box and was wondering if when you use the pre record on the epg.can you stop it changing from the one i'm watching to the pre recorded one (it's annoying when you watching the footie and it turns over automatically).
    thanx
