Ok, so my pvr went down before christmas. I updated the firmware with a fix i downloaded, I think it was marked 08-12-08. Anyway followed instructions and the software updated but still no channels (well i was getting 2 or 3.)

So I figured no problem, just wait for the programming guys to fix a few bugs and get a new fix in the new year. As expected new fixes came out - this is where the problem arose.

I connected the pvr and my laptop by USB. Opened up the pvr in MY COMPUTER and opened the folder FIRMWARE. I deleted the existing firmware (the 08-12-08 fix) and copied over the new fix: StarViewPVR-21122008.

I disconnected the laptop and turned on the pvr's menu on the TV. Went to the update new software from HDD option (paraphrasing here, you know the one I mean) and entered 0000. the new firmware was listed here and what I am afraid happened is that the new firmware was deleted leaving the pvr empty. Now when i turn the pvr on all i get is B-31 on the display - nothing on the TV and nothing if i connect it to a laptop with usb.

So I connected it to my computer with serial cable, used the loader to download the latest fix to the pvr and it wont go past 0% - keeps giving an error message after 20 - 30 seconds.

    anyway ideas?

    Hi
Yes, take my advice and forget the USB laptop method and use a PC with a 9 pin com port and make sure you are ONLY using a Null Modem Cable, nothing else will work. Others may have been lucky and flashed theirs ok with a laptop and USB adaptor, BUT more people are STILL having problems with these adaptors.

    Hi
Ok, if you need confirmation if your cable is correct or not and you or your friend have a meter for a continuity check then only three lines are needed inside the cable for both way transfer, Pins 2to3, Pins 3to2, and Pins 5to5.

Null modem cable just delivered from ebay - Bad News

The firmware wouldn't download - no difference from the last cable i was using. I also got a slight electrical shock as i was pulling the new cable out of the PVR.

Do I need to invest in a new box? Any recommendations?

    Hi
It looks that way, just a couple of other suggestions to try, try putting an earlier firmware on but using a different loader or different loaders, there are a few in the eko 4 library, could finally try another PC in case of Com port troubles.

Sorry, no recommendations ATM no twin tuner models around. The USB Starview 4 seems reasonable, but only single tuner.
