    Hi guys,

Thank you for taking time out to read this. I sincerely appreciate it. I tried looking for previous post about my problem before starting a new thread, but couldn't find one so sorry, I'll have to bother you guys with this one.

The other day I experienced a lot of pop ups, after I uninstalled a bunch of programs and did a system restore, the popups were still there. I then decided to be bold (and stupid) and went into the registry to delete folders that had "fishy" names. This is where the problem started.

After I did this, I cannot start my windows. It goes pass the black Windows screen (with the moving blue bar) and gets stuck at the pretty blue "welcome" screen (the screen right before you see your desktop). Does anyone know why?

I put in my Windows XP Pro disk and booted from it. I went into the Recovery console with led me to a limited dos-based black screen. I found some commands for it, which included CHKDSK C: (friends told me this would scan and fix the drive), but it didn't work. I even tried to start up in safe mode, last known good configuration, etc. but still...it gets stuck at the welcome screen.

Does anyone know how to restore the registry when we cannot get into windows? The recovery console's dos is limited, so you can't use commands like scanregw or anything fancy like that. I have lots of snntimental files that I would lose if I reformmated, so are there other options?

Please help me solve this puzzle!

Thank you guys for taking time reading this essay =)

Hope to hear from you soon,

    Jenny

You should NEVER mess with the registry unless you know what you're doing. You might be better off reinstalling your OS and start fresh.

After this, I don't think I will touch it again. Starting fresh and reformatting, is this the only option?

No I haven't backed up my data. Are there any other options?? What if I install a fresh copy of Windows instead of trying to repair it (meaning, no reformatting, just put in the Windows CD and install a new coyp of Windows) if I did this, would my data still be there?

most likely but your programs might have to be re-installed because of any deletions you did in the registry affecting those programs.

If you want to back up your things, make a linux boot cd, such as ubuntu. Boot from the and back up your documents and such on an external hard drive, usb stick, ipod, etc. That is just what I would do, I wouldn't trust my information with repairing windows...

i'm thinking of making a new partition on my C drive (where my original Windows is at) then install a fresh copy of Windows XP. You guys think this will work? My files will still be there?
