Hi all, thanks for taking the time to read.
My dilema is: If i have a total of 4 RAM slots, and two are already occupied with 2 x 256MB sticks, and i put in an extra 1 x 512MB stick, how much total accessible RAM is there? I now have 1 spare slot.
    Is it better to put another 2 x 256 making for a total of 4 x 256mb or have 2 x 256 + 1 x 512, and leaving one slot spare??
Someone told me that even if i add 1 stick of 512 to the current config, i will only get a total of 768mb. Is this true?

thanks for your time and help.

should have 1 gig but that depends on the motherboard. i prefer using 2 sticks at a time so that if 1 goes bad you still have the other 1 til get a replacement

ok ddp, the goal is to have 1GB at the end but whats ur answer to the question? Will adding one stick of 512 to 2 x 256 sticks give a total of 768 or 1 GB?
Some people say u cant use RAM thats bigger than the RAM beside it. Do you agree?
    Cheers.

A total of 768. Just go buy a gig. Cost bout 750..00 over at neweggg. Then put the 256 in next. Make sure the biggest ram is right next to the cpu.

edit....remeber biggest...the next size down.......the the smallest size....

If your motherboard takes DDR RAM, if you use only 3 slots, it may run in single channel mode. I know that mine will, if I use that configuration.

Best policy...fill 2 slots or all 4 slots.

Hey thanks fellas, yes it is DDR RAM and there are four slots in total, 2 have been used with 2 x 256 already. It a KM2M MSI mobo. I think i will get 2 more sticks of 256 to make 1 GB. Will that work?

Thats funny Pippa, my understanding was that the KM2M MSI motherboard had only 2 slots for DDR ram and 2 slots for SDRam. Funny that. Do you have a magical motherboard that changes to 4xddr slots or something? cuase you must you potsy mongrel. where do i buy one of these magical boards from? I think they would be a real hit on ebay. Come on guys lets get him! And the answer to your question about aichieving 1 Gb or ram is simple. You see Pippa, the same people that made ur magical slot changing board also make 1 Gb sticks of ram. Buy a bull dozer!

Ya know what Dingo, ur a mad mongrel! You'd drop a stick of dynamite on my head, u would. Perhaps u should buy yourself a bull dozer and drive away on it, since u obviously know so much about RAM. Maybe try and answer the question, instead of showing us all how potsy u are. Just a thought...

No hes right. Stop being so damn cheap...go buy a gig for bout 80 off of newegg or if your mobo supports it...a dual channel kit of two gigs or two 512s...which would be faster than a single gig. Problem solved. No fricking brain tease.

And by the way dingopelt, a turkey like you would feel right at home around the chicken shed! gobble gobble, gobble gobble!!

I am quite certain that I have missed something here, outside of the fact that pippa's mobo only has 2 DDR slots. LOL

That lousy mongrel Dingo! I got that mobo from santa claus...didnt even believe in the turkey!
Im not invisible, whats invisable is ur brain! Haahhahahaha!
You couldnt break my arms and legs cause Jake the Muss would break yours first then slap ya silly and tell ya to go make him some eggs.
I dont know how to handle money, so buying a GB of RAM could be expensive, especially when i will have to bin the 512 thats already in there. Seems like a waste.

and another thing...why would they have 2 types of RAM on one board if ya cant use em together? How stupid! Make a decision to go with one type and stick with it. "O-kay mate"

You must be a real turkey pippa, you really must not know how to handle money if you going round throwing 512mb of ram in bins you potsy mongrel. I think your full of bull dust, dug yourself a bundle of garbage and dreeeamed the rest! And you damn right lucky i didnt buy a bulldozer cuase I would have come to your house knocked it over including your chicken coop you bastard guy.
Maybe you should have asked santa for some magical size changing ram aswell when you asked him for your magical slot changing board you goose.
Better yet, forget buying ram i think you should just go buy a calculator as all this technology seems to much for you to get a grasp of! I think we should stop calling you pippa and start calling you Casio!
Now stick that in your biscuit tin you flamin mongrel!
