Hi, I have my IBM r40 thinkpad and it turns on and then the screen starts flikering after a while and then everything just freezes. I opened up the laptop and found the cooling fan and then I turned it on and it seems the fan spins a bit at the beginning and then after the IBM of the bios comes up, it stops and a bit later, it comes on again for like 2 minutes and never comes back on again and the CPU overheats and then the screen flikers and then it just jams. I am sure its an overheating problem, I just want to know why the fan is having such strange behavior. Any ideas? (I've already reapplied thermal compund)
thanks but I fixed it somehow, I pulled out the orange wire of the fan (there are red, blue and orange) by mistake and the fan kept going so I got it working but now, I turned it off and tried turning it back on and it boots to the bios and then it says fan error. After it shuts down, the fan keeps spinning at full speed backwards. I have to remove the power plug for it to stop. Why would it do this? Sometimes it the screen doesnt even turn on.
