I want one, now! That's just insane...too bad it has to be at temps of zero to run that fast. :( Means it would only work in Antarctica. I'm packing now. :D

lol im coming with u well thay said that 350GHz could be run at room temp thats just so kool i just bought a 2.8 intel dualcore thought that was fast (which come today and my mobo just hope the ram dose to)

i might come with you both, some one bring a copy of half life lol. but dam i mean those must cost alot. and by commercially available they mean only to goverment and large organizations...

I just wonder when we will see even a 1/4 of these speeds being put into an average computer? 2050...2075?

Imagine games in which 300 GHz is the [bold]minimum[/bold] spec...a video card with 2 TB of memory or higher. Hell, we won't play VR, we'll be playing RR...eh, come to think of it, that's kind of scary. Will our brains know the difference between vitural reality and real reality? After long lenghts of play time I don't think we would. We'd get reality mixed up.

but then again this isnt a cpu its a chip and this performs differently than cpus do. so the actually ghz you get on your comp will be less but still a big step up from todays cpus

i'm sure you'd be able tell whats real and whats not.

Maybe not. Think about playing a war FPS with the most realistic graphics(real life graphics). It's going to have some bad affects. Look at how far we have come since Playstation and that was just over a decade ago. Try to imagine another 3 decades from now...we will have games that look like your watching television. Playing with some VR glasses(or similar, could be a 360 degree screen) means your are completly emersed in the game. Playing for hours and hours will have some great affects on the brain. Reality will be crossed between the two because our brains cannot tell the difference between what it sees and what it remembers.

I think we must be careful in making big jumps in gaming technology, especially for our kids!

Thing is though, how much is that sucker going to cost. They said it might be commercially available in two years.

I'm thinking upwards of $500,000 a piece. Or maybe over $1000,000. It's definitely going to break the bank.

Is there such a thing as a motherboard that can have 2 physical CPU's installed on it (available to the public)? If so, can't we have two physical 3.4 Ghz dual core CPU's? I mean come one, isnt that a more realistic goal? I say this cuz 500 Ghz or 350 Ghz is a bit too expensive...I know its not counted like this but 3.4 Ghz*4=13.6 Ghz (without overclocking)! Thats an amazing (yet realistic) goal, wouldnt u ppl agree?

Just out of curiosity, is that 350-500 Ghz CPU dual-core? If not, it should atleast have Hyper-Threading! Even if it doesn't, it will be really fast but Hyper-Threading gives a 5-10% increase in performance, so...5% of 350 Ghz is 17.5 Ghz (thats not how you count it at all but bassically 17.5 Ghz worth of CPU management).

*stares in speculation* I wonder. At 350GHz wouldn't dual cores not even matter?

They wouldn't but it would obviously be better if it was. The reason CPU's became dual-core in the first place was because, they couldn't make a single core CPU faster (in terms of Ghz) due to heat reasons, etc.

Exactly. It would be better. But at that point there are no bottlenecks possible and dual-core is just showing off.

Now if you did tri-core that would be a winner. Three identical CPUs on one chip. Two are a dual-core and the third coordinates actions and data transfer between the two. With three 350GHz cores you could create a platform that could power entire global networks by itself. And it would set a standard so high it would be top dog for a decade without any challengers.

350Ghz? When my name's Bill Gates. It isn't. Forgive my scepticism but that sort of speed is a way off. We've moved away from clock speeds for a bit. 3400mhz CPUs could be had 3 years ago, and now we have 3800mhz, and that particular processor is slow! The core 2 duo has now allowed for overclocks near 5Ghz, but that's way off 350.

sammorris. If you read it a bit more closely. The article says it could possibly be available for purchase in a few years.

Possibly. The article is actually a bit too condescending on current CPU speeds, above 4ghz is possible, but only with an OC! :D
