Have narrowed down possible new DVD burner I'd like to buy to 16X Black Super-Multi Internal DVD Writer Model (GSA-4167BK) by LG or 16X Multiple Format DVD+/-R/RW/DL Burner (Model ND-3540ABK) by NEC. Both available at Shop4Tech at a reasonable price. Heard all kinds of good things about NEC but have a Panasonic DVD recorder and would like to be able to copy some programs from DVD-RAM discs on computer. The LG is the only one that covers all DVD formats and doesn't cost a fortune, BUT I have been fooled by companies tooting their own horn on products and then being disappointed after the fact. So far all of the participants at AD and this forum have given me good advice especially with AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 as well as DVD media.
    Your input appreciated!

I have the NEC drive and love it, however I'm not familiar with the RAM media so I don't know if it will do what you want it to do. Hacked firmware is available for the drive that removes the riplock and also allows for booktyping. I got mine from newegg.com for 36 bucks, no tax, and no S&H in about two days.

I have an LG GSA-4163B and love it. No problems with it at all. Reads everything.

    Cheers.

Thanks to those that have responded. Everyone has a favorite and appears that both drives would be safe purchases. Just have to search for best deal on either. Looked at Newegg but shipping free from Shop4Tech on almost all their stuff and since they are in Calif, as I am, would be fast delivery. Since I travel a lot and would like to be able to play some of my DVD-Ram recordings so leaning towrds LG. Just have to drop a few more "hints" regarding Christmas wish list. Maybe add a few 100 packs of Taiyo Yuden discs. Still waiting for DL discs to drop in price before attempting to burn. At current price even one coaster hard to swallow.
Shall retire this inquiry as more important issues appear to be the focus now. Especially the DREADED Sony encryption. To Sony I say, don't try to fool the fools, they're too inventive. To all the software developers out there, keep fooling the big guys and maybe they will start pricing movies closer to what they actually cost to produce and you might avoid many of the issues that plague you today.
    Best to all. rn73
