Just around the time that I started thinking about this, Apple came out with its Apple-TV... but I want something a little more versatile. I'd like to know if something like the following exists (I'd imagine it does), and I'd like the general name for this type of media gadget. I basically just want a box that is like the Tivo/Apple TV. I don't NEED it to be connected to any kind of satellite service. I just want it to have (1) internal hard drive space, (2) USB or firewire ports so that I can add additional hard drive space via external hard drive, (3) I want it to have a digital interface guide, just like the Tivo boxes do, and (4)I want it to be remote-controller operable. With this, I'd be able to store as much media content (video/music) as I want, and I'd be able to scroll through my files via Tivo-like digital graphics. Hopefully I've explained that well enough for everyone to envision.
Depends on your budget... http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Network-ready-Player-WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN/dp/B002KKFP9Y It doesn't have an internal HDD, but you can attach external ones. It is a great player, you can stream wirelessly, great community support. http://www.wdtvlive.com/ If you want a real tank, and got the money, you can go for PopcornHour http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/index.php?pluginoption=productspec&item_id=12 You can install additional internal HDD, even a blu-ray burner.
