Used Virtual Dub to rip the audio file from a movie because TMPGEnc didn't pull the audio. Tried to go back to TMPGEnc and use the audio file that I got from Virtual Dub, as has been done before, but this time the program stops responding. What could cause this?
VirtualDub saves as 'WAV' even a compressed (e.g. AC3) sound which it cannot uncompress. You can see it only if you compare, in that file, length vs size: a 'real' WAV is 10.1 MB x minute large (1200-1300 MB for an approx 2h movie). An AC3, instead, is few hundred megabytes. Suggestion: use VirtualDubMod, instead. Open the file, select Stream__Stream List. You'll see the correct sound the movie has (Ac3, ACM, DTS ...). Now click 'Demux' (not 'Save WAV' , which often gives you the same uncomptressed file if you don't have the proper sound decompressor installed) and convert that file to WAV (or even MP2 , which by default is compressed 'CBR 224 kbps', the same way TMPGenc makes for a mpeg file) with HeadAC3he. When you open the sound with HeadAC3he, check the 'Stream info' box, just below the 'destination file'. If the sound is 44.1 kHz, all is well; if it is not, check the box 'Resample to 44.1 kHz', which lies a little below that (well, the downsampling 48 kHz (DVD) --> 44.1 kHz [(S)VCD] can be made even by TMPGenc, but HeadAC3he uses the best resampler available [SSRC]). NOW TMPGenc can load the 'real' WAV/the MP2 you just made. If you made a 224 kbps .MP2 sound file, you could even multiplex it to the 'mute video' you made, if you did it, saving time (not needing to encode everything another time, if you already did it). Alas, VirtualDub is a little imprecise on the sound streams, VirtualDubMod is a little more precise (but is not perfect, since it allows you to 'Save WAV' even if your PC cannot uncompess the sound stream....)
