When trying to open an avi file in TMPGenc i get this error -->"File C:\filename.avi can not open, or is unsupported". I noticed that this issue was brought up in another thread, but the solutions given there did not fix the problem? Anyone have some ideas for me? Also, using MainConcept, like many people, i got video but no audio. So, out of 2 programs, i got one to half-way work. I'd much rather have TMPGenc working though. Thanks for your time. You help would be greatly appreciated!
What did the other suggestions (assuming Gspot was one of them) tell you? What type of audio does the avi have? Do you have that audio codec installed on your computer? Did you raise the priority of the VFAPI reader? Can you watch the file in WMP? Have you tried extracting the audio as .wav and using that as the autio source in tmpgenc?
Hey rebootjim, 1)The solution was actually to raise the priority of the VFAPI read. Gspot tells me that i do have the required codecs needed. 2)Gspot says it has "0x0055(MP3, ISO) MPEG-1 Layer 3" 3)Yes 4)Yes 5)I dunno, i erased the file before i saw you post, so i can't try, 6)No i haven't. Too bad you erased it. The file has vbr mp3 audio, and encoders usually won't recognize it, thus the original error. If you open the file in virtualdub, select audio, full processing, then file, save .wav, it will give you the decompressed wave. Open tmpgenc, select the original avi as the video source, and the .wav as the audio source, then encode. If tmpgenc still throws up the error and won't let you load it, then do this" Open the video in virtualdub again, select audio, no audio. Select video, direct stream copy, then file, save avi. This will give you an avi with no audio. Load that avi, and the .wav into tmpgenc.
I downloaded VirtualDub, and when i tried to load the file, it gave me an error, saying it needed a DX50 codec. So i downloaded divx player, and loaded file again. V-dub said, just like you, that the file had VBR audio and it would either have a XXXXms skew, or if unacceptable, i could extract the .wav file. Well, before i did anything else, i load TMPGenc and opened the file. It actually loaded, so before i go spending lots of time trying to encode the file, do i still have to go extract the audio file as wav or will TMPGenc be okay now? Where do i need to look to find the best settings to convert the avi to a standard Dvd. (ie. Aspect Ratio,video movie or film movie(im guessing film),interlace or non-interlace, rate control mode, etc).Also, should i load the file as CBR or VBR? Almost there,lol. Thanks A lot Rebootjim
Because tmpgenc has serious trouble trying to encode VBR mp3 audio, I would definitely extract the .wav (takes about a minute), then use that .wav as the audio source for tmpgenc. If you don't, you could end up with no audio, or horribly bad sync. To get the best settings, click LOAD, and select the DVD template (PAL or NTSC for your location).
Thanks a lot Rebootjim, i extracted the WAV and encoded the avi using the WAV as the audio as you said, and i have once fantastic Mpeg2 file. I appreciate your help greatly!
